Final Fantasy Resonance introduces a new way to experience iconic characters from across the franchise, combining familiar heroes, unique abilities, and customizable party strategies.
Final Fantasy Resonance puts a new spin on the series’ legacy characters through its Visions system, a gameplay mechanic that allows players to recruit familiar faces from previous entries and use their powers to shape combat. Alongside its HD-2D visuals and turn-based battles, the system gives longtime fans a new reason to explore the franchise’s history while building a party tailored to their preferred playstyle.
The game follows Rain and Lasswell on their journey through Lapis, where players can discover crystal shrines containing stories connected to heroes from earlier Final Fantasy titles. These encounters introduce Visions and explain their backgrounds before allowing players to equip them as companions.
What Are Visions in Final Fantasy Resonance?
Visions are more than traditional summon attacks. They represent legendary characters who provide permanent stat improvements, magic, physical attacks, and other abilities to the party members who equip them.
Players encounter these companions through crystal shrines scattered throughout the world. Each shrine features a short narrative sequence, including video clips and questions related to the featured character. Completing these encounters unlocks a Vision that can be assigned to a party member.
The system includes 26 companions drawn from across the franchise, featuring recognizable characters such as Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, Zidane from Final Fantasy IX, Terra from Final Fantasy VI, Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII, and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII. The roster also includes characters originating from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the game on which Final Fantasy Resonance is based.
Each Vision retains recognizable animations, attacks, and musical elements associated with its original appearance, connecting the new adventure with the series’ history.
How Visions Improve Combat Abilities
Every Vision provides a selection of abilities and passive bonuses when first unlocked. These benefits can improve a character’s attributes while expanding their available offensive and magical options.
For example, Noctis from Final Fantasy XV can increase a character’s attack power and provide access to spells such as Thunder and Blizzard. As players use a Vision in battle, it gains mastery points that unlock additional bonuses and specialized abilities.
Some upgrades also interact with the party’s Limit Burst gauge, which fills during combat and enables powerful attacks. Other Visions provide utility-focused skills. Zidane, for instance, can unlock Steal and later gain access to Mug, which adds damage to his theft attempts.
Visions also have a special Resonance ability. After players exploit enemy weaknesses and deplete their stagger meters, they can unleash cinematic finishing attacks associated with their equipped companions. Cloud’s Ascension Resonance is one example of how the system brings familiar signature moves into the game’s battles.
Building a Party Around Visions
The biggest impact of the Visions system comes from its customization options. Rather than simply calling a powerful character into battle for a short period, players can use Visions to change how their regular party members perform.
Each Vision has a particular role and set of strengths, encouraging players to experiment with different combinations. Characters can develop specialized abilities or become more versatile depending on which companions they equip.
Lasswell, for example, specializes in breaking enemy defenses. Equipping him with Leah, an original character from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, gives him access to healing magic and additional support options. Alternatively, pairing him with Cloud can strengthen his offensive capabilities.
Zidane can also complement Lid, whose Commando role focuses on dealing damage. His Saboteur abilities provide enemy debuffs and disruption, giving the combined setup greater flexibility in combat.
Players can further improve their Visions by collecting magicite and visiting the Moogle of Light to increase their base ranks and unlock additional abilities. As affinity develops through use, the benefits associated with each companion become more significant.
A New Way to Celebrate Final Fantasy’s Legacy
Although Visions are central to its combat system, Final Fantasy Resonance also incorporates familiar elements from across the franchise. Its orchestral soundtrack draws on established musical themes, while its adventure features a mix of sweeping environments and darker narrative moments.
The return of recognizable details, including the ability to ride Chocobos accompanied by their familiar theme music, adds another connection to earlier games.
By combining legacy characters with progression systems and flexible party building, Final Fantasy Resonance gives players a different way to revisit the series’ most recognizable heroes. Instead of limiting these characters to brief appearances or conventional summons, the Visions mechanic makes their abilities an important part of the main adventure.
