Riot Games is preparing a major transformation of the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) in 2027, introducing a tournament-focused format designed to give more teams a chance to compete at the highest level. The updated structure will feature more than 50 tournaments throughout the year, new qualification opportunities, increased financial support for qualifying teams, and events across 15 cities worldwide.
Announced on October 15, the new format builds on Riot’s plans to make VALORANT esports more accessible while creating more meaningful matches throughout the season. Instead of relying on extended periods of league competition, the VCT will place tournaments at the center of its competitive calendar.
The changes will affect both established partner organizations and teams looking to break into the international scene, potentially reshaping the road to the season’s biggest events.
VCT 2027 Introduces a Tournament-First Format
The 2027 season will revolve around five key stages of competition: Opens, Kickoff, Cups, Masters, and Champions. Together, these events will create a more flexible competitive structure with additional opportunities for teams to progress.
Riot plans to organize more than 50 tournaments across the year, allowing teams to enter the competitive ecosystem through open events and advance by winning matches. The goal is to give emerging organizations a clearer route toward regional and international competition.
Partner teams will remain an important part of the VCT, but their status will not guarantee continued progression throughout the season. After Kickoff, results on the server will determine which teams advance to subsequent tournaments.
This approach is intended to make competition more unpredictable, with established organizations facing challenges from teams that earn their places through open qualification.
Open Qualifiers Give More Teams a Route Into the VCT
One of the biggest changes for 2027 is the expansion of open qualification opportunities. Teams will be able to compete for places in the VCT without first securing a partnership slot.
The first qualifiers for the 2027 season are scheduled to begin in November 2026. These competitions will offer teams their initial opportunities to qualify for Kickoff, while further Opens during the season will create additional routes into Cups and other major events.
Regional qualification pathways may include community tournaments, partner events, collegiate competitions, and Premier, Riot’s in-game competitive system. The specific routes and allocations will vary by region.
The expanded system is designed to let teams make multiple attempts to reach major tournaments rather than relying on a single opportunity. Strong performances can also help organizations accumulate Championship Points and earn competitive payouts throughout the season.
VCT Cups Will Bring More LAN Events to Different Cities
Cups will become a central feature of the revamped competitive calendar, with regional tournaments providing another route toward international events.
Riot has outlined plans for two Cups per territory each year, with eight Cups expected across the four international territories. These LAN competitions will replace the traditional regular-season league format and conclude with finals-weekend events.
Cups will also play an important role in determining qualification for Masters and Champions. By placing more emphasis on individual tournaments, Riot aims to give regional competitions greater significance while allowing more teams to compete for international opportunities.
The broader VCT tour will span 15 cities during the season, bringing live events to more locations and giving additional communities the chance to experience top-level VALORANT competition in person.
More Financial Support for Qualifying Teams
The revised format will also introduce additional financial incentives for teams that earn their places in major competitions.
Qualifying teams will receive payments tied to their tournament participation, with amounts increasing according to the size and importance of each event. Riot has also outlined plans for more financial support for teams entering through the open system, including guaranteed qualification payments.
The competitive calendar will feature prize pools totaling more than $6 million per year, alongside fully funded travel for global events. These measures are intended to help organizations manage the costs associated with competing internationally.
The new structure could be particularly important for teams outside the established partnership program. With more opportunities to qualify and earn tournament revenue, emerging organizations will have additional ways to support their players and invest in their competitive operations.
Game Changers Championship Will Conclude at Champions
The 2027 changes will also affect the VALORANT Game Changers program. Riot has announced that the Game Changers season will conclude at Champions, bringing its finale to the VCT’s biggest audience of the year.
The move places the program closer to the center of the overall competitive calendar and gives its top competitors a place within the season’s wider championship structure.
Riot has also outlined a new esports bundle for 2027, with the Ghost replacing the Classic as the featured weapon. Further details about the bundle and other elements of the upcoming season are expected as the launch approaches.
VCT 2027 Begins in November 2026
Although the new structure is designed for the 2027 competitive season, the road to the next year will begin before 2026 ends. Open Qualifiers are scheduled to start in November, giving aspiring teams their first chance to secure a place in the upcoming competition.
Riot is expected to provide additional information about regional calendars, qualification slots, and tournament details as the season approaches.
With more tournaments, expanded qualification routes, and increased financial support, the 2027 VCT represents a significant change to the VALORANT esports ecosystem. The new format will put greater emphasis on tournament results and give more organizations an opportunity to challenge established teams for places at the sport’s biggest events.
