Riot Games is reworking Mel in League of Legends Patch 26.22, removing the projectile-reflection mechanic from her W ability, Rebuttal, as part of an effort to make the champion less frustrating to face. The update will preserve her defensive identity while shifting more of her power toward scaling, passive interactions, and late-game team fights.
In a developer update, Riot explained that Mel’s distinctive reflection mechanic initially appeared to strike a reasonable balance between rewarding skilled players and giving opponents opportunities to adapt. However, as elite and professional players became more familiar with her kit, the developer found it increasingly difficult to balance her abilities without making her frustrating to play against.
The upcoming mid-scope update will remove Rebuttal’s ability to reflect enemy abilities while retaining its projectile destruction and retaliation effects. Riot is also adjusting Mel’s passive, Q, E, and Ultimate to reduce her early-game strength and improve her contribution during longer fights.
Why Is Riot Removing Mel’s Rebuttal Reflection?
Mel’s W has been one of her most distinctive abilities since her introduction. Rebuttal allows her to counter incoming projectiles, creating situations in which opponents can see their own powerful attacks turned against them. For example, Mel could reflect Seraphine’s Ultimate back toward an enemy team or redirect Jhin’s fourth shot against him.
While these interactions created memorable moments, Riot found that they also made certain matchups excessively difficult. The developer said Mel initially settled into a relatively stable state, with a win rate around 48–49%, a ban rate between 15% and 30%, and a high pick rate. Over time, however, experienced players adapted her kit to their playstyles, and her ban rate remained high even as her win rate fell to approximately 45–47% and her play rate dropped significantly.
According to Riot, these trends indicated that opponents continued to find Mel frustrating despite her declining overall performance. The team concluded that her existing kit could no longer deliver a satisfying level of power without creating problems for other players.
Riot considered several alternatives, including a shorter-range version of Mel and a Rebuttal variation that stole the first missile to hit her. Both approaches were ultimately rejected. Reducing her range changed too much of her established gameplay, while the missile-stealing version introduced complicated interactions that could make team fights difficult to follow.
Moving projectile reflection to her Ultimate was also considered, but Riot decided against weakening Golden Eclipse or making Rebuttal powerful enough to justify an Ultimate-length cooldown.
How Mel’s New Rebuttal Ability Works
Under the new design, Rebuttal will no longer reflect enemy projectiles back at their original targets. Instead, the ability will release a projectile-destroying nova that shields Mel and her allies, grants them movement speed, and retaliates against incoming attacks with a small amount of damage.
The changes retain the ability’s defensive purpose while removing the interactions that made it especially frustrating for opponents. Mel players will still be able to protect themselves and their teammates from incoming projectiles, but they will no longer be able to use Rebuttal to redirect powerful abilities at enemy champions.
Riot expects the revised ability to be less impactful in some situations than the current version. Removing reflection also gives the developer more flexibility to redistribute power across the rest of Mel’s kit.
All Major Mel Rework Changes in Patch 26.22
Alongside the Rebuttal changes, Riot is adjusting several of Mel’s abilities to address her early-game strength and improve her scaling.
Passive – Searing Brilliance
Mel will lose some early-game durability and passive damage in exchange for improved health and armor scaling. Riot is also making it easier for her to build multiple passive stacks on opponents, addressing a weakness that often limited her impact to a single takedown during team fights.
Q – Radiant Volley
Radiant Volley will be slightly slower, with less damage concentrated in its initial explosion and more damage distributed across subsequent hits. The ability will also receive a flat cooldown refund when it hits at least one enemy champion, helping Mel use her abilities and build passive stacks more consistently.
These adjustments should make the ability more manageable for opponents during the laning phase while supporting Mel’s performance in longer engagements.
E – Solar Snare
Solar Snare’s root duration will become shorter against nearby enemies and longer against enemies farther away. This change makes Mel more vulnerable when opponents get close while rewarding players who successfully land the ability at longer ranges.
Ultimate – Golden Eclipse
Golden Eclipse will receive additional cooldown reduction as its ability level increases. This change is intended to reward Mel players who build multiple Searing Brilliance stacks and create more opportunities to use her Ultimate during extended fights.
Together, the ability adjustments will move some of Mel’s power away from the early game and toward scaling. Riot hopes this will make her less dominant in certain matchups while giving her more opportunities to contribute throughout a match.
What the Mel Rework Means for League of Legends Players
The changes represent a significant shift in Mel’s gameplay, particularly for players who rely on Rebuttal to counter specific enemy champions. Without projectile reflection, she will lose some of her strongest counterplay opportunities, making positioning, timing, and team coordination more important.
However, the revised defensive ability will continue to provide value through projectile destruction, shielding, movement speed, and retaliation. The improvements to her passive stacking and Ultimate cooldown should also help her contribute more consistently in team fights rather than relying primarily on early-game advantages or isolated counter interactions.
For opponents, the removal of reflection should make fighting Mel more predictable, particularly when using high-impact projectile abilities. The adjustments to her Q and E may also create more opportunities to challenge her during the laning phase.
When Does the Mel Rework Release?
Riot plans to bring Mel’s mid-scope update to live servers in League of Legends Patch 26.22. The update focuses on reducing frustration around Rebuttal while redistributing her power to improve her scaling and team-fight performance.
Players can expect a substantial change to one of Mel’s signature mechanics, alongside adjustments to her passive, Q, E, and Ultimate. For more League of Legends coverage and the latest gaming news, stay tuned to Gamelevate.
