Blizzard is taking a stricter approach to real-money trading in World of Warcraft: Forever, warning players that buying, selling, or knowingly receiving illicit gold could result in serious account penalties.
The warning comes as the WoW: Forever beta continues ahead of the game’s planned launch on November 4. With the in-game economy already becoming an important part of the beta experience, Blizzard has confirmed that it is actively monitoring accounts involved in gold trading outside the game’s approved systems.
Blizzard Targets WoW: Forever Gold Trading
In a recent update on the official World of Warcraft forums, Blizzard said it has been taking action against accounts involved in botting and the acquisition of illicit gold during the WoW: Forever beta.
The company specifically stated that action has been taken against players who purchased or knowingly received gold obtained through real-money transactions. Blizzard also confirmed that its enforcement efforts will continue both during the beta and after the game’s full launch.
Players found to have participated in generating, selling, buying, or receiving illicit gold could have their gold removed. Depending on the circumstances, Blizzard may also suspend accounts or permanently close them.
This represents a broader approach than simply targeting the players and accounts selling gold.
Earlier in the beta, Blizzard warned that it would increasingly take action against buyers rather than focusing solely on sellers. Players were also told to be careful when accepting large or unexpected amounts of gold from strangers, particularly if there is reason to believe the gold came from an illegitimate source.
New Warning Will Appear When Trading With Strangers
Blizzard is also preparing an in-game warning for players who trade with people they do not know.
The message will remind players that accepting gold from suspicious sources could put their accounts at risk if the gold is connected to real-money trading. The warning is intended to make players more aware that simply receiving illicit gold can potentially lead to account action.
The policy is particularly relevant to WoW: Forever, where players are already experimenting with professions, the Auction House, crafting and other ways to build up their wealth during the beta.
Blizzard’s latest statement makes clear that players should not assume they are safe simply because they did not personally purchase the gold. Knowingly accepting illicit gold can also result in penalties.
Gold Buying Becomes a Major Issue During the Beta
Real-money trading has been a longstanding issue within World of Warcraft, but the situation has attracted renewed attention during the WoW: Forever beta.
Blizzard previously acknowledged that it had been too lenient toward some gold buyers and said it intended to take a much more aggressive approach going forward. Developers have warned players that losing access to an established World of Warcraft account permanently is a possible consequence of participating in real-money trading.
The studio has now reiterated that position while confirming that enforcement is already taking place during the beta.
With the beta scheduled to continue through October 21 and WoW: Forever set to launch on November 4, Blizzard’s latest warning gives players a clear indication of how seriously it intends to police the game’s economy.
For players looking to build their wealth legitimately, the message is straightforward: gold earned through normal gameplay is safe, while involvement with illicit gold trading can put an entire account at risk.
