Many users are waking up to see PayPal blocked on Steam in their country!
Valve is being forced by the banks to remove the payment option in many places.
But why are they doing this, and what can Valve do to fight back?
PayPal Blocked on Steam
As stated by Valve themselves in early July 2025, PayPal told Valve that their acquiring bank for payment transactions in certain currencies was immediately terminated. Meaning the banks decided it was time they had PayPal blocked on Steam.

However, this only affects currencies outside of EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD, and USD. So for now bigger markets like the USA, the UK and others are still able to use them.
But many other countries outside of this have been hit hard and no longer have access.

Now the acquiring bank is the bank that handles payments on the company’s side. Essentially they are the ones handling the money for Steam.
Also this comes right after the Collective Shout and Visa Card fiasco. Not long ago at all we had many other payment processors forcing Valve’s hand to remove games. Now we have PayPal blocked on Steam only for a select number of places.

But the move to only block smaller market counties is indeed on purpose and malicious. See, if these banks really did have a problem with Steam’s content, then they would have pulled away entirely. However, you can still use them in bigger countries.
Because enforcing this in smaller countries with fewer legal protections is much safer. It sends a message to Valve without causing too much of a stir.
In fact, a Reddit user calling up PayPal customer services claims they are blatantly blaming Valve. He claims they said it was Valve who pulled the plug, but upon reading out their statement, they got frustrated and hung up.
This was the same smear tactic that MasterCard used to shift blame.
Gabe Fights Back
Although PayPal being blocked on Steam is a big hit to Valve, it’s not the killer by any means. Steam’s statement clearly shows that they are aiming to fight back by looking at alternative payment methods.

We may even see Valve create their own payment process like they created their own SteamOS. Because they have the funds and resources to stand on their own against these big banks.
Also, the move of legislation from Japan and the US against banks doing this sort of thing shows that the mainstream outlets have caught on to the issue.
PayPal Blocked on Steam is part of a bigger wide-scale plan to control what you can purchase online. These freaks think they have the right to control what everyday people should be able to purchase with their own hard-earned money.

Although Valve are complying now, they are definitely making moves to rectify the issue. What is crazy is how blatant the organised push from all companies at once comes across. They are not even trying to hide it!
Needless to say, it would be interesting to see Valve once again assert their dominance in a new market!
ValvePay, here we come!
