Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is an upcoming single-player action RPG from Invoke Studios that takes players into the gothic world of Ravenloft. Set in the Domain of Dread known as Darkon, the game follows Kaatri, a skilled weapons master who makes a pact with the witch queen Tasha to gain powerful warlock abilities.
With a focus on exploration, spell-based combat, and player choice, Warlock aims to deliver a different take on the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons release date and platforms
Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is currently targeting a 2027 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
An exact release date or launch month has not been announced yet. More information is expected as development continues.
The game was first revealed in late 2025 before receiving an extended gameplay showcase during Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live on August 25, 2026. The presentation provided a closer look at combat, exploration, Kaatri’s abilities, and the world of Darkon.
What kind of game is Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons?
Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is a single-player, open-world action-adventure RPG played from a third-person perspective. Exploration, magic-based combat, and player freedom are at the center of the experience.
Unlike games such as Baldur’s Gate 3, Warlock does not feature traditional tabletop D&D mechanics such as dice rolls, character creation, or party-based gameplay. Players take control of Kaatri throughout the entire adventure rather than creating their own character.
The game is set in Darkon, one of the Domains of Dread within the Ravenloft setting. The realm is ruled by the lich Azalin Rex, whose disappearance has left Darkon unstable and slowly falling apart into the Mists.
The developers are also emphasizing player agency. Players can approach certain encounters and obstacles in different ways, using weapons, magic, or combinations of their abilities.
Warlock gameplay details
Exploration and spell progression form a major part of Warlock’s gameplay loop. Players will explore Darkon, discover Raw Magic, and use it to unlock and improve Kaatri’s magical abilities.
Rather than relying on traditional D&D spell slots, the game uses cooldowns and other action-RPG-style resources. This is designed to keep combat moving while allowing players to regularly experiment with Kaatri’s abilities.
One of the more interesting aspects of the magic system is that spells are not limited to combat. Many abilities can also be used to explore the environment, overcome obstacles, and solve puzzles.
For example, Kaatri can transform into a raven, allowing her to pass through small openings and access otherwise unreachable areas. Other abilities, including Levitate, Gust of Wind, and Black Tentacles, can also have uses outside of combat.
The world itself is designed to encourage exploration rather than simply directing players from one objective to another. Darkon features settlements where Kaatri can interact with NPCs, upgrade her weapons, and discover additional quests.
Combat and exploration
Combat combines Kaatri’s weapons with her warlock powers, giving players multiple ways to deal with enemies. Magic can be used directly against opponents, but its environmental applications are equally important.
This creates a gameplay loop where gaining a new ability can potentially open up previously inaccessible sections of Darkon. Players will need to pay attention to the environment and consider how Kaatri’s powers can be used beyond straightforward attacks.
The combination of melee combat, magical abilities, traversal powers, and environmental interactions is expected to be one of the game’s defining features.
What to expect at launch
At launch, Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is expected to offer a single-player, story-driven campaign centered on Kaatri’s search for her lost loved one while Darkon continues to collapse.
Players can expect:
- An open-world setting featuring settlements, dungeons, hidden areas, and exploration opportunities.
- A spell-focused combat system built around cooldowns and action-RPG mechanics.
- Magical abilities that can be used for combat, traversal, and puzzle-solving.
- Multiple ways to approach certain obstacles and encounters.
- Weapon upgrades, NPC interactions, and quests within Darkon’s settlements.
- A fixed protagonist in Kaatri rather than traditional character creation.
However, several details remain unknown. Invoke Studios has yet to reveal the game’s exact 2027 release date, the full resource and magic-cost systems, campaign length, the scope of side content, or its post-launch plans.
