Independent developer Over the Moon Games has announced that Vampire Hunter: Nightrise will launch on PC via Steam on July 14, 2026. The first-person gothic adventure is already playable through a newly released demo and promises a unique blend of action, exploration, and environmental puzzle-solving.
Described by the studio as “Castlevania meets Tunic,” Nightrise challenges players to hunt down a powerful vampire hidden within a sprawling castle filled with secrets, traps, and mysteries.
A Castle Built Around Discovery
Unlike traditional action-adventure games that rely on keys, quest markers, and progression gates, Vampire Hunter: Nightrise centers its gameplay around knowledge.
Players enter the castle with a single objective: reach and defeat the vampire before nightfall.
The twist is that nearly every area of the castle is technically accessible from the beginning. Hidden passages, rotating fireplaces, moving bookshelves, and mysterious portraits conceal pathways throughout the environment, but unlocking them requires understanding how the castle functions rather than simply finding the next key item.
This design philosophy draws inspiration from critically acclaimed exploration-focused titles where player knowledge becomes the primary form of progression.
Combat With Stakes Literally
While exploration plays a major role, Nightrise also features a distinctive combat system built around a specialized stake launcher.
Players can pin enemies to walls, ignite stakes by firing them through flames, and even use environmental objects throughout the castle as improvised ammunition.
The combat system encourages experimentation, allowing players to combine environmental interactions with traditional vampire-hunting tools to overcome threats lurking within the castle’s corridors.
Faith Shapes the Story
One of the game’s more intriguing mechanics revolves around faith.
Throughout the adventure, players are constantly tempted to sacrifice their faith in exchange for power and advantages. These choices influence the narrative and ultimately determine how the story concludes.
By tying progression and moral decisions together, Nightrise adds another layer of tension to its atmospheric journey.
A Focused Horror Experience
Over the Moon Games describes Vampire Hunter: Nightrise as a complete experience designed to be finished in a single sitting.
The adventure is expected to take approximately three hours to complete and emphasizes atmosphere, mystery, and psychological tension rather than graphic violence or excessive gore.
The studio’s goal is to deliver a tightly paced experience without unnecessary filler content or sprawling open-world systems.
Inspired by Tunic and Outer Wilds
According to the development team, Nightrise was heavily influenced by games that reward curiosity and player-driven discovery.
The developers cite both Tunic and Outer Wilds as key inspirations, particularly in how they allow players to overcome challenges through understanding rather than simply unlocking new abilities.
This philosophy extends throughout the castle, where learning how the environment works becomes just as important as mastering combat.
