Independent developer Over the Moon is taking a unique approach to the vampire-hunting genre with its upcoming action RPG, Vampire Hunter: Nightrise. Rather than treating faith as a simple narrative backdrop, the game transforms belief itself into a resource that players must manage throughout their journey.
Set to launch on July 14, 2026, the title explores themes of conviction, temptation, and sacrifice while challenging players to survive a castle designed to attack more than just their health bar.
Faith Becomes a Gameplay Resource
The concept behind Vampire Hunter: Nightrise began with a simple question: if vampire hunters repel evil through the power of faith, what happens when that faith begins to fade?
According to Over the Moon director John Warner, the team followed that idea to its logical conclusion and discovered a deeper gameplay system at its core.
Rather than functioning as a passive story element, faith becomes a resource that can be strengthened, spent, or lost. As players progress through the castle, they will face temptations and opportunities that offer immediate power at the cost of their convictions. These choices influence both gameplay and the narrative outcome.
“The castle had a way to attack more than your health,” Warner explained. “It could test you, tempt you, and offer power in exchange for conviction.”
A Different Take on Vampire Lore
While the game incorporates themes rooted in Christian symbolism, Over the Moon emphasizes that Vampire Hunter: Nightrise is not designed as a religious experience.
Instead, the studio sought to engage seriously with the ideas that have long been embedded in vampire fiction. Concepts such as consecration, temptation, damnation, and redemption have traditionally shaped the genre, and the development team chose to explore those elements more directly rather than treating them as background decoration.
According to Warner, taking these themes seriously ultimately strengthened both the game’s world-building and narrative consistency.
The result is a story where player choices carry meaningful consequences, with every compromise and bargain shaping the hunter’s journey and influencing the game’s ending.
