If you have it installed please head over and Update 7Zip right now.
Because there is currently a vulnerability that could leave you wide open if not!
But what is this safety issue and how do I update this program?
How To Update 7Zip
Firstly head over to this website here to Update 7Zip. We are going to want to click on the 26.02 version being the latest one. Make sure it is appropriate to your operating systems bit rate. We can check this in Windows 11 by going settings, system and about. Near the bottom it should say operating system and whatever the number is there in bits is what you are running

Secondly once downloaded run the exe and let it install and you are done. Pretty simple because it is a pretty simple program.
Although if you have recently downloaded it for the first time then there is no issue. But if you are running any version that is below 26.02 then you are at risk!
Unfortunately this means a lot of people are going to be as there is no auto mode to Update 7Zip. Instead you are going to have to check what version you are on. Most likely if you are reading this now and downloaded it more than a month ago then you will need to.

However to properly check run the program and go to Help then about 7-zip. Here it will tell you the version you are running and the bit rate it is aimed at. If that number says anything below 2026-06-25 then get updating partner!

Although this is a big security risk it is the first time ever I have seen something like this. Having to actually Update 7Zip out of necessity is quite crazy. But I am going to do so and keep using it because I like it and its worth the 10 seconds to download!
What Is This Beast
Basically, if someone sent you a specially-made bad file and you opened it in 7-Zip, that file could trick the program into running extra code it wasn’t supposed to. Think of it like a booby-trapped file pretending to be normal.
The good news? It’s not as scary as it sounds. First, you’d actually have to open the bad file yourself — it can’t sneak in on its own. Second, even if it worked, the “bad code” would only get the same limited permissions 7-Zip already has, not full control of your computer.
Security experts rated it “High” risk, not “Critical,” and so far nobody has actually used this trick to attack real people.

The best part: the people who make 7-Zip already fixed it! They released an update called version 26.02 back in June, before this bug was even made public. So if you use 7-Zip, just make sure you download the newest version from their official website — it won’t update itself automatically.
I’m not going to go into overflows and local attack vectors just Update 7Zip! Or uninstall it and go for Winrar if you really want to. Again I prefer the former.
