Genji is pretty well known in Overwatch for being rather annoying, making finding the top 3 Genji counters in Overwatch 2 more difficult.
However, it isn’t impossible. Knowing where the hero’s weaknesses lie and figuring out how to take advantage of them is key.
For some, it will take a little trial and error before knowing which heroes to pick and how to play them.
However, that is where we come in. Gamelevate has compiled this list for new and old players alike. For anyone looking to start their journey, or just level up their game, you’ve come to the right place.
Zarya is one of the top 3 Genji counters in Overwatch 2 for many reasons. The first one being that Genji cannot Deflect her attacks.
This means that if he tries to close the gap on her with his dash, he won’t be able to dodge her attacks.
To make it even harder for him, Zarya’s shield is easily spammable if used correctly.
On top of the fact that, the more damage her bubble takes, the more damage she dishes out. So no matter what Genji does, he just can’t win.
He would need help from his allies to get a kill on her, but since he is a lone wolf, that usually doesn’t happen.
Lastly is Zarya’s ultimate. One of Genji’s biggest strengths is his incredible mobility.
But with one Surge, he gets completely shut off.
All this makes it very hard for him to work around her.
As far as damage heroes go, Mei is absolutely one of the top 3 Genji counters in Overwatch 2. First are her basic blaster attacks.
While Genji can block her icicles, he cannot block her slowing ability.
So for the times he tries to get too close, she can slow him down to the point that he won’t be able to escape, and his fate is sealed.
However, for the times Mei is using her icicle, it almost always does enough damage to one-shot him, or at least put him to very low health.
Snipers are good into Genji for this reason.
But Mei is just a cut above because she can deal with him at close-range, whereas traditional snipers have difficulty in that area.
For the times when he can survive and deal enough damage to almost kill her, with one click of a button, Mei can use Freeze to protect and heal herself.
Once she is back to full health, she can unleash an attack that will shut him down.
Lastly, is Mei’s Blizzard and Ice Wall. By using this combo, Mei can block in Genji just long enough to keep him in her ultimate and take him out before he can cause any problems for her team.
This is a key ability for when he uses his ultimate, since he can kill Mei’s allies fairly easily.
But if he can’t move, or if he is dead, he can’t do anything.
Finally, we’ve made it to the best support for this matchup. Moira shouldn’t be a shock to anyone, since she is a powerful hero as a healer and a damage dealer. This easily makes her one of the top 3 Genji counters in Overwatch 2.
Similar to the previous two on this list, Genji can’t deflect any of her attacks. This means that in close-ranged combat, he will have to be on his toes. But something that gives her an edge to match this hero is her mobility.
If Genji closes in on Moira and things start to look grim, she can Fade away and get to safety.
Or, she could even throw out a healing orb to help her get back to a more manageable health for another bout of fighting.
Once she gets her ultimate, she can easily chase down Genji, even with how mobile he is, and can overpower him fairly easily. This allows her to pick up a kill while hopefully helping heal her team a bit too.
The wrap up
There are plenty of other good picks into Genji, but each of the heroes on this list is one of the best in their own regard for each role.
They each have something to contribute and can all easily handle a problematic Genji with minimal help.
That said, for players looking to spice things up, it’s a great idea to try out other heroes. Just remember to use what you learned in this list as a baseline to judge how you pick your heroes.
But it’s always safe to stick to the heroes on this list of the top 3 Genji counters in Overwatch 2.
