With TI10 happening in less than a month from now, we take a look at the teams competing for Dota 2’s biggest event of the year. In this piece, we take a closer look at Evil Geniuses, North America’s last hope and the only team from the region to have won a previous Aegis – can they win a second one at TI10?
Evil Geniuses at TI10 – will Arteezy finally break the curse?
- Artour “Arteezy” Babaev (position 1)
- Abed “Abed” Yusop (mid-laner)
- Daryl Koh “iceiceice” Pei Xiang (off-laner)
- Andreas “Cr1t-” Nielsen (soft support)
- Tal “Fly” Aizik (hard support)
North America’s top team is the closest they’ve ever been for a second shot at glory at TI10 this year. While they have lost Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan as a mid-laner, his replacement, Abed, has showcased himself as one of the players to watch. His performances have given Evil Geniuses a fighting chance at many of the Majors and other tournaments they competed in, with Abed becoming the primary play and space maker for Arteezy.
All of that said, they still need to get something out of the way, and that is the supposed ‘Arteezy curse.’ The prolific Canadian player still has not won a single Major tournament yet, despite coming close twice this year and falling short of their Chinese opponents
If Evil Geniuses are to get a second Aegis, then it would have to be this year at TI10. The team has looked very good in many of their tournaments, with every player managing to perform at some of the highest levels of play, especially Cr1t and iceiceice. That said, Evil Geniuses are one of those teams that have incredibly good fundamentals, but below-par flexibility. This means that while they can adapt to the metagame, they are not the greatest innovators, and they are always countered sooner or later which leads to their inevitable loss.
If the team can work on this aspect of their play, then North America has a very big chance of finally celebrating their second TI win.
The International 10 will run from October 7 to 17. Stay tuned for our coverage of Dota 2’s biggest event of the year.
