A new indie experience is making waves on PC, as The Wake launches a free playable demo starting April 24. Developed by Playground Pigeon and published by Ultimate Games S.A., the title combines fishing, combat, and exploration in a dark, supernatural setting.
The full version of the game is currently planned for release in 2026 on PC, with console versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S also in development.
A dark fishing adventure inspired by cosmic horror
Set in a world influenced by H. P. Lovecraft’s signature style of cosmic horror, The Wake drops players into a mysterious archipelago after a violent supernatural storm. Stranded among ancient ruins and eerie waters, survival depends on mastering both fishing and combat.
The surrounding seas are filled with strange, primordial creatures, each with unique behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses. Players must study these creatures carefully, learning how to track and defeat them using a mix of fishing tools and combat abilities.
Fishing meets combat in a unique gameplay loop
Unlike traditional fishing games, The Wake introduces a combat-driven system where each catch becomes a battle. Fish are not passive targets, they attack, use arcane powers, and require strategic thinking to defeat.
Players will need to:
- Use specialized rods, hooks, and bait to lure creatures
- Dodge incoming attacks during encounters
- Drain enemy energy through combat mechanics
- Execute finishing moves to secure the catch
Success depends on proper timing, tactical decision-making, and adapting to different enemy types found across the islands.
Exploration, upgrades, and magic systems
Beyond combat, exploration plays a key role in progression. As players traverse the island chain, they’ll gather resources to upgrade their gear, including weapons, fishing equipment, and their ship.
The game also features a magic system powered by primordial energy. Runes can be used to enhance abilities, offering customization options that impact both combat efficiency and fishing success.
What to expect from the demo
The newly released demo gives players an early look at the core gameplay loop. It introduces the game’s setting, mechanics, and a selection of mutated sea creatures to hunt.
Key features in the demo include:
- A blend of fishing and combat gameplay
- A dark, Lovecraftian-inspired world
- Open-world exploration across eerie islands
- Resource gathering and equipment upgrades
- A customizable magic system
With its mix of genres and atmospheric setting, The Wake aims to offer a fresh take on both fishing and action-adventure gameplay. The full release is expected in 2026, with more details to come as development continues.
