The browser-based mafia RPG expands its career system, achievements, heists, equipment, and more five months after launch.
The Fifth Family, a browser-based mafia RPG, has launched the first phase of its Version 2 update, delivering the biggest overhaul in the game’s history.
Version 2 Phase One went live on August 11, 2026, roughly five months after the game’s March launch. The update rebuilds or expands 29 systems, using player behavior and feedback from the first months of the game’s operation to reshape its progression and gameplay systems.
Careers and Achievements Get Major Expansions
One of the biggest changes comes to the career system. The previous eight career paths have been expanded to 100, with each path connected to one of the game’s five criminal families.
Every career includes four ranks of permanent passive bonuses, while reaching the highest rank provides an exclusive item.
The achievement system has also received a significant expansion. Instead of 70 individual entries, players now have 224 four-tier achievement lines, resulting in 896 individual claimable tiers. The system also includes 26 category capstones for players looking to complete entire achievement groups.
Estates Replace the Mansion System
The update also replaces several existing systems rather than simply adding new content to them.
The former Mansion system, which featured 13 upgradeable rooms, has been transformed into the Estate system. It now features eight construction wings containing 28 nodes and 280 levels, with actual build times incorporated into progression.
Collections have similarly been reworked into Crime Vaults. Players can complete these vaults twice to earn increasingly valuable permanent bonuses before eventually converting them into a cash trade-in.
Heists have also been redesigned. Rather than relying on a single-roll resolution system, heists now take place across 110 stages, giving players opportunities to decide whether to secure their current rewards or continue pushing their luck for greater returns.
Three New Systems Arrive
Version 2 Phase One introduces three completely new systems.
The Forge allows players to upgrade any of 668 eligible items through 10 published rank tiers, reaching a maximum upgrade level of +10.
Set Bonuses add 30 equipment sets containing a total of 210 pieces. Players who collect matching equipment can unlock additional bonuses.
The third addition is Syndicates, which introduces a Family Favor economy featuring six tiers, 66 missions, and a store containing 157 items.
Street Intel, Vigilantes and Street Racing Rebuilt
The update also completely rebuilds The Fifth Family‘s espionage system, Street Intel.
The revamped system features 240 scenario templates, 10 reward bands, a mastery tree for each category, and five capstone abilities.
The Vigilantes system has expanded from seven recruitable operatives to 95, alongside the introduction of a new currency called Alignment Shards.
Street Racing has also been expanded with a nine-phase driving minigame, 15 races, and a 175-part Chop Shop economy.
Other systems receiving substantial changes include Bloodline perks, Academy courses, Crimes, Family upgrades, Rackets, Properties, and Crates.
A Rebuild Based on Five Months of Player Data
According to the development team, much of The Fifth Family was originally designed during the game’s first few months, before there was enough player data to fully understand how its systems would be used.
Version 2 Phase One was therefore built around the lessons learned from five months of actual player behavior.
The development team also used a feature-flag approach during the rollout. Each Version 2 system operated behind its own feature flag alongside the existing Version 1 code until the transition, allowing the developers to test the new systems against live data and roll them back individually if necessary.
The development team has also grown from one person to two, with Zach joining as Head of Content. He was heavily involved in the design of Version 2 and is also working on future expansions and updates.
The Fifth Family Continues to Grow
The Fifth Family is free to play through a web browser and also has companion applications for iOS and Android.
The game launched on March 29, 2026, and has grown to more than 6,000 registered users and over 400 daily active users, according to the development team. The studio says this growth has come with limited marketing activity.
The game takes place across 10 city districts and allows players to build criminal careers through crimes, heists, smuggling runs, and espionage. Players can join one of five criminal families and participate in a persistent world that continues operating even when they are offline.
Version 2 Phase One represents a major step forward for the game, with dozens of systems either redesigned, expanded, or introduced to create a deeper progression experience for its growing player base.
