One day, far off in the future, history will look back at Fifa 23 as the final hurrah between EA and the footballing world’s governing body. The pair have collaborated together for well over two decades and pioneered their way to creating the most successful sports simulation titles the world has ever seen. But, with EA announcing their severing of ties with Fifa, it’s all coming to an end after Fifa 23 launches. ‘EA Sports FC’ (we’re still not sold on the name) is on the horizon but, in the meantime, we still have one last release to salivate over.
With the new domestic season in Europe looming ever larger, talk over the next release in the series has begun to pick up again. And, EA has given fans the first glimpse at the new title with the new cover art for the Standard and Ultimate editions this year.
Mbappe The Star Signing Again
For years, the Fifa cover housed at least two or three different stars from around the world, with our personal favorites being the Ronaldinho-Wayne Rooney era at the end of the 2000s.
However, since Lionel Messi on Fifa 13, the cover art has been strictly reserved for one superstar. Messi, Marco Reus, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Kylian Mbappe have all been the box art stars of choice for EA since 2013, and it looks like the latter of these has been given the honor once again.
Kylian Mbappe has been named Ligue 1 Player of the Year three times, has finished as the division’s top goalscorer for the past four consecutive seasons, and is still hotly regarded as one of the footballing world’s most exciting talents.
Having appeared on the cover of Fifa 21 and Fifa 22, it looks like this upcoming release is all set to be the Frenchman’s personal hattrick of EA titles.

A Historic Moment
Mbappe, however, isn’t alone on the cover of Fifa 23 this year. Chelsea’s Sam Kerr has made history by becoming the first female athlete to feature on a global Fifa cover, unveiled as a part of the Fifa 23 Ultimate Edition.
The Australian talisman is also being given her own solo cover for a special standard edition that will be released in Oceania and as an Amazon exclusive.
2022 Has been a momentous year for women’s football on the back of rising interest and the success of the 2022 European Championship, so seeing EA embrace more diversity in their covers will undoubtedly open more doors to budding players across the globe.
The Women’s game mode was first introduced back in Fifa 16, but the inclusion of Sam Kerr on the cover of Fifa 23 has led plenty to speculate as to whether EA might be giving this feature a bit more love this year. We already know the Women’s World Cup is getting its own mode, but don’t expect this to be the only addition EA makes.

An Innovative And Feature-Packed Title
Speaking about the upcoming release and reveal of this year’s cover art, David Jackson, VP Brand, EA SPORTS FC claimed:
“Both Kylian and Sam are generational talents, and having them grace the covers of the final Fifa is a monumental moment not only for the franchise but for EA SPORTS as a whole.
Fifa 23 is our most innovative and feature-packed title ever and we’re energized to have two of football’s greatest players share their love of the game with fans around the world.”
