Teamfight Tactics is evolving once again. With the launch of K.O. Coliseum in TFT Patch 15.1, Riot is bringing a major overhaul to unit roles and items. The spotlight? A full TFT Roles Revamped system that redefines how champions generate mana and interact with items.
Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is TFT Roles Revamped?
Previously, unit roles in TFT mostly suggested what items to give a champion. Now, roles are tied to how units behave in combat—especially how they gain mana. This opens up more creative design space while fixing edge cases like splash damage charging enemy ultimates.
Every unit in TFT now has two role components:
- Damage Type:
- Attack (AD-based)
- Magic (AP-based)
- Hybrid (uses both)
- Team Role:
- Tank: Gains mana when taking damage
- Fighter: Durable frontline with Omnivamp
- Assassin: Mobile, less-targeted melee damage
- Marksman: Ranged basic attackers
- Caster: Ranged spellcasters with passive mana regen
- Specialist: Unique mechanics like Kayle or Viktor
There are 18 total role combos, though not all appear in every set. The TFT Roles Revamped system ensures units earn mana by doing their intended jobs—tanks get hit, casters cast, and assassins jump in.
Why Change the Mana System?
The old system gave every unit 10 mana per attack and additional mana from taking damage. This led to:
- Melee fighters abusing Omnivamp in long fights
- Casters prioritizing attack speed over mana items
- Tanks struggling with huge mana pools
- Weird interactions with AoE feeding enemy carries
The new approach makes mana generation feel intuitive. Attackers get rewarded for attacking, and frontliners gain mana by soaking damage—no more awkward edge cases.
Item Changes in Patch 15.1
To support the TFT Roles Revamped system, a huge list of item updates is dropping with TFT Patch 15.1. Here’s what’s changing: Major Updates:
- Mana → Mana Regen:
Items now grant mana regen, not flat starting mana. This smooths power spikes and scales better throughout combat. - New Keyword – Lifeline:
All effects that trigger at low HP (like shields or untargetability) now fall under the Lifeline tag. - No More Unique Tags on Crafted Items:
Items like Blue Buff or Edge of Night are no longer unique. You can stack them if you want—your comp, your call.
Key Item Reworks:
- Blue Buff: Now grants 5 mana regen, 15 AD, and 15 AP. Not unique.
- Morellonomicon: Drops attack speed, gains 2 mana regen.
- Adaptive Helm: Gives extra mana gain based on your champion’s role.
- Giant Slayer: Stronger bonus damage vs. Tanks.
- Protector’s Vow: Lifeline now grants mana and a shield.
Radiant and Artifact versions of these items have also been reworked to match the new system.
What It Means for Your Games
Don’t worry—you won’t need to relearn everything. Your frontline is still your frontline, and backline units still cast spells. But thanks to TFT Roles Revamped, the way your champions scale and cast abilities is now cleaner and more logical.
The update gives Riot more room to create new, creative unit types—like melee spellcasters—and helps eliminate frustrating or unintuitive gameplay.
TFT Roles Revamped and the full item overhaul go live with TFT Patch 15.1 on July 29, just in time for your next tournament arc in K.O. Coliseum.
