Replacing Tremors with Soaring Slam has made Rammus a much more viable champion in the competitive scene.
The change-up
Whenever a League of Legends champion gets a rework, it can significantly change its power level for the better. Fiddlesticks is a prime example: when he received his rework, most of his abilities remained the same save for his E ability, previously known as Dark Wind. This would allow him to toss a crow at a target and would bounce to enemies and silence them. His new E ability, Reap, allows him to use his scythe to slash in front of him instead, dealing damage and if in a certain range, silences targets.
This ability rework had fans in a tizzy since Dark Wind was so iconic, but in the end, players found that Reap was a much-needed balance change to the champion and still served the function of helping Fiddlesticks farm his camps. Now, Rammus has received a similar treatment to his ultimate ability, and fans are loving it.
Rammus’s new ultimate ability is called Soaring Slam, and it offers a bit more damage and utility than his previous one. Though it has a lot of moving parts, but if used correctly, it can easily swing a teamfight in Rammus’ favor.
Adapt and overcome
At a base level, Soaring Slam allows Rammus to jump forward and, upon landing, deal magic damage and slow all enemies caught in its radius. The jump is initially a short distance, but scales on his movement speed, so the faster he is, the further his jump goes, similar to Warwick’s ultimate. The second part of the ability happens after Rammus lands, when the area of impact creates an aftershock that triggers three times. All enemies in that area are dealt extra magic damage and slows enemies.
Things start to change when Rammus uses Soaring Slam while using his Q ability, Powerball. Now, enemies in the center of the landing radius are briefly knocked up as well as taking the damage from Powerball.
It may not seem like much, but this one ability can completely change the way Rammus is played. Traditionally, Rammus was played strictly as a tank, meaning that he builds items like Sunfire Aegis or Thornmail. However, with this new ultimate, he can choose to either go full ability power (AP) or an AP-bruiser hybrid. Now, Rammus can build items like Night Harvester or Cosmic Drive to not only give him some tankiness to survive fights but to also make the most of his movement speed so that his ultimate ability can have a larger range.
Prior to this change, Rammus’s main source of damage was through his taunts and would nee his teammates to clean up what he couldn’t handle alone. With these new changes, however, Rammus can easily take 1v1 fights on his own because he can easily one-shot squishy enemies just by landing his ultimate.
Not only that, but his teamfight strategy is completely changed as well: now Rammus can easily get to the enemy backline. There is no more worrying about having to Powerball or Flash into the enemies and pray that they don’t get away from you. Simply by using his ultimate, you can avoid the struggle of a risky engage and can secure a win for your team.
These changes are really something unique and many players agree that this change is a great new take on Rammus. Now, a champion that was just annoying in team scuffles is a dangerous foe that can easily turn the tide of any full-fledged fight.
