Symmetra is a rather unique hero because, while she can provide a lot of damage for her team, she also wants to play the role of a support. With her Sentry Turrets, she can not only deal damage, but control objectives and key routes to prevent opponents from making any sneaky plays. Symmetra also has her Teleporter, which can allow her team to close any distance needed to get to an objective faster. Not to mention that she can provide shields to her team with her Photon Projector and Photon Barrier. By using these in fights, she can protect her team from an onslaught of attacks so that they can win their skirmish and continue to hold an objective. With all of this in mind, Symmetra can certainly be a powerful hero in the right hands. However, that doesn’t mean she is unstoppable. In order to help players better find ways to beat her, here are 3 Overwatch heroes that counter Symmetra.
Symmetra counter #3: Pharah
When looking for a damage-oriented hero to pick into Symmetra, Pharah is at the top of the list. With her Jump Jet, she can easily take to the skies to avoid any Sentry Turrets that may be sitting around. While in the air, she can also avoid any of Symmetra’s shields, allowing her to deal damage to the enemy team. With Pharah being a problem in the air, Symmetra will be forced to choose between using her Photon Projector shield on the ground or in the air. However, the catch is that either decision will doom her team since they will be weak to either one or the other. Another big bonus to picking Pharah in this matchup is the fact that, with her aerial view, she can scout for Teleporters so that she can take them out and prevent her opponents from getting the jump on her team.
Something Pharah players need to watch out for in this matchup is that, because she is so strong here, she will be a big target to take down. This means that Symmetra’s team will have to deal with Pharah before they can deal with their other opponents. Because of that, she will need to limit her time in the air and know when enough is enough. If she overstays or overextends, it could be the end of the game for her team.
Symmetra counter #2: Winston
For players looking for a tank to pick when going against a Symmetra, Winston is an ideal pick. With his high mobility, he can get around any shields that she may try and put up to protect her team. This makes him a great vanguard to initiate a fight with his allies. He also has his Primal Rage, which is a great ability into Symmetra because she can no way of blocking it. This makes her very susceptible to attacks Winston may try and put out when using his ultimate. To make it even better, his Tesla Cannon can easily take out Symmetra’s Sentry Turrets since he doesn’t need to take the time to target anything. Plus, with his tanky nature, he can soak up the damage from the orbs on Symmetra’s Photon Projector and have enough health to live through it, so he will still be able to fight with his team after he takes a few hits.
When playing Winston in this matchup, it is important to remember that he doesn’t have any long-ranged attacks. Because of that, he will need to get fairly close to Symmetra in order to deal enough damage to take her out. Something else to keep in mind is that, while is Tesla Cannon can take out turrets, it does take a little bit of time, so if he walks into a wall of turrets it may not end well for him.
Symmetra counter #1: Junkrat
When a player is looking for a damage hero that can easily counter Symmetra, Junkrat is as best as they come. With Symmetra’s many shields, it will be annoying for her opponents to try and break through them. However, that is no issue for Junkrat. With his Frag Launcher, he can lob explosives through her shields so that it gets to his opponents as if there was no shield there at all. Junkrat also has his Steel Trap and Concussion Mine, which is a hard counter to Symmetra’s Teleporter. When he puts these traps over where opponents will spawn from the Teleporter, he can kill them before they even get the chance to fight back. Because his opponents can’t even reach the objective, it will be hard for them to try and contest it. Even with just one enemy down, Junkrat and his team will already have an advantage over them and can initiate a game-winning fight.
In this matchup, it is quite hard for Junkrat to make a game-losing mistake. As long as he stays with his team and doesn’t overextend too far when playing his traps on a Teleporter, he will be fairly safe. The one thing he will have to watch out for are flanks. With his low health, if an enemy like Sombra or Tracer decides to pull a sneak attack from behind, it could be risky for Junkrat and his team. Because of that, it is best that his team have at least one ally covering their backs.
