The Overwatch 2 team is once again focusing on a key challenge—hero balance. As one of the most discussed parts of game development, balance plays a big role in keeping matches fair and fun. In this week’s update, the devs take us inside their approach, showing how data and feedback drive change. They also share what’s ahead in Season 17.
Numbers First, Then Tweaks
The team constantly tracks win and pick rates. Their goal is to keep every hero within a 45-55% win range. If a hero falls outside that range, changes are likely coming.
Hero Ban data is now a major tool. It shows which heroes are frustrating players the most. For example, Widowmaker gets banned a lot on sniper-friendly maps like Havana. But that doesn’t always mean she needs nerfs—it depends on context.
Freja’s ban rate rose fast among high-tier players. At first, her low win rate led to buffs. But as players mastered her, bans increased sharply, especially above Diamond rank. To address this, the team increased cooldowns on her movement skills and slowed her reload time. These tweaks helped ease player frustration without removing her impact.

Player Feel Also Matters
Raw data is only part of the equation. The team also weighs how a hero feels in live matches. They rely on community feedback and match analysis to make sure changes are fair.
Sombra is a current concern. She has high ban rates on PC and console. However, her case is more complex and may take time to solve.
Season 17 Balance Updates
Several balance adjustments are coming in Season 17, starting June 24. Here are a few highlights:
- Damage Role Passive: Healing reduction goes from 25% to 30%. This gives damage heroes more impact.
- Regen Delay: The global health regen timer increases from 5 to 6 seconds. This makes damage feel more meaningful.
- Bastion Size Shrink: Bastion will be 10% smaller, helping him survive better in fights. He still packs a punch, but now has a lower profile.
- Junker Queen Buffs: Her Commanding Shout will better support teammates by prioritizing Overhealth.
- Other Improvements: Pharah’s Helix Shields and Lifeweaver’s Cleansing Grasp will receive quality-of-life upgrades.
Looking Ahead
The Overwatch 2 balance team continues to listen and adjust. Every patch aims to keep gameplay fun, fair, and challenging.
