Tomorrow marks the third anniversary of Overwatch 2, and the development team sees this milestone as both a celebration and a turning point. Game Director Aaron Keller, along with Dion Rogers and Alec Dawson, shared their thoughts on how the game has evolved and where it’s heading next.
Finding the Magic Again
Keller reflected on how the original Overwatch came together almost effortlessly. The art, design, and engineering teams worked in perfect sync. That spark dimmed during the early years of Overwatch 2, as its direction shifted. The challenge became redefining the game and recapturing that sense of unity.
The team decided to double down on competitive PvP. This shift allowed them to focus on refining balance, gameplay, and long-term direction with the help of fresh talent like Dawson.
Alec Dawson’s Journey
Before joining Overwatch in 2022, Dawson worked on Hearthstone. He described the transition as finding a true home, noting how the Overwatch team slowly built trust and identity leading into and beyond the sequel’s launch.
His major contribution was pitching the Perks system. The idea was risky, changing a gameplay loop so deeply ingrained that many considered it sacred. But it worked. Perks arrived in Season 15, followed by Stadium in Season 16, marking bold steps that revitalized the community’s excitement.
Lessons From Three Years
For Rogers, the sequel’s growth has been both personal and professional. The art and design teams faced the challenge of respecting classic heroes like Winston and Tracer while introducing new faces such as Ramattra, Kiriko, Mauga, Freja, and Wuyang. Each year demanded balance between consistency and innovation.
Dawson added that the team has learned to embrace risks rather than fear them. What once felt intimidating now feels like opportunity. The success of Perks proved that players are ready for more ambitious changes.
Looking Ahead
The developers hinted at even bolder plans. Upcoming seasons will deliver larger updates, including fresh heroes, maps, and gameplay systems. Keller noted that Season 18 finally hit the bar for a strong mid-year release, and future updates will aim even higher.
Rogers teased new visual styles and unexplored parts of the Overwatch universe. The team promises surprises for even the most dedicated fans.
A Shared Vision
All three developers agree: the “magic” of Overwatch is back. The team is aligned, energized, and ready to take more risks. With the community’s support, they’re aiming to push the game further than ever before.
“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being on this journey with us,” Keller said. “The next three years are going to be wild. Buckle up and let’s make a great game.”
