Season 19 of Overwatch 2’s Stadium mode is here and it’s shaking things up. Systems designer Larry Wu and the Blizzard team have officially rolled out Gadgets, a brand-new feature designed to give players more control and creativity in every match.
What Are Gadgets?
Gadgets are Overwatch 2’s answer to “active items.” Think of them as powerful, buyable tools that let players trigger special effects mid-match. Whether you’re escaping danger or turning the tide of battle, these items introduce fresh ways to strategize and outsmart your opponents.
Each player can equip one Gadget per round and swap them between matches. Fourteen different Gadgets launched with Season 19, covering a range of effects and price points, making sure there’s something for every playstyle.
Strategy and Variety
Some Gadgets are inspired by the abilities of iconic Overwatch heroes. For instance, Dashing Skates mimic Freja’s agility, while Exo Springs echo Baptiste’s high-ground jumps. However, these items are tuned carefully to remain less potent than their hero counterparts, preserving each character’s unique role.
Players will also notice key tradeoffs. Common Gadgets offer quick boosts for the early game, while Epic Gadgets are high-cost investments capable of completely flipping a late-round fight. The system rewards smart decision-making and timing.
How Gadgets Evolved
According to Wu, Gadgets went through several iterations before landing in their final form. Early versions gave players free access to all items, but testers found them overwhelming or too complex. Blizzard refined the system to feel balanced, optional, yet impactful.
By adding costs and stats, the team found new ways to balance Gadgets dynamically. Overpowered effects can now be tuned via price or stat adjustments rather than ability nerfs, ensuring long-term flexibility and fair competition.
Advanced Tips for Players
For those looking to master Gadgets, Blizzard shared a few high-level examples:
- Colossus Core: Grants Unstoppable status with bonus Life and Damage Reduction—perfect for Tanks creating space on the front line.
- Super Serum: Increases Attack Speed by 50% for five seconds, great for burst-heavy damage builds.
- Refresher: Reduces cooldowns by 8 seconds, letting ability-focused heroes unleash devastating combos.
Wu recommends experimenting with combinations to find what fits your playstyle. “The goal,” he says, “is to give players the freedom to shape their own fight.”
The Future of Stadium
With the addition of Gadgets, Overwatch 2 Stadium continues to evolve into one of the most tactical experiences in the game’s competitive lineup. It bridges fast-paced combat with deep strategy, inviting players to think beyond hero abilities and explore item-based synergies.
Whether you’re dashing across the battlefield or doubling your cooldown resets, these new tools make every round more dynamic and more dangerous.
