The Overwatch 2 Developers are continuing to improve the game based on player feedback with new changes to the Map Pools.
Another communication piece recently appeared in a new blog post by Aaron Keller, Lead Level Designer at Blizzard. This time Keller’s post focused on the issue of changes to Overwatch map pools and level designs.
However, before we jump into that, here are some of the other areas that have already been adjusted based on comments (gripes) by players:
- Phone number requirement is removed
- Credits will be available again
- Shop prices are more affordable
- Hero unlocks now faster with a reduction of 10 battle pass tiers
- Matchmaking optimized for a better player experience
- Rank reset has been eliminated for a stable ranking system
- Map pools have become more flexible
So, with that being said, let’s take a look at a synopsis of the most recent blog comments about the changes in Overwatch Maps.
Overwatch 2 Map Pools Changes in Season 4
According to the post, Map Pools will no longer be available starting in season 4. The initial aim was to provide a fresh experience each season and reduce the number of maps played.
However, the developers quickly realized that player sentiment about these map changes was low. The map roster did not have enough maps where they were needed.
The impact on seasonal identity was also low. The timing of maps entering and leaving the pool did not align with changes to the maps.
Gibraltar was supposed to return in Season 4, but the playtesting and iteration has called the deadline into question. The Devs may bring back Map Pools in the future with a faster rotation rate, potentially every week.
Map Frequency
Contrary to player belief, there is no special code that prefers one map over another. The matchmaking system elevates Push maps slightly to avoid playing the same map and game mode over a short period of time.
This may cause Colosseo and other Push maps to come up more frequently than other game modes. The Devs aim to resolve the issue of map frequency in a future season.
This is especially important with the scheduled release of a new game mode and maps later this year.
Overwatch 2 Map Design Changes
Players have reported spawning on defense in Gibraltar right before the first checkpoint and feeling unsure about getting back to their team alive.
The Devs have looked into level design changes to fix this problem, but they have the possibility of opening new flanking routes for the offense. So, the Devs are searching for solutions that don’t require map changes.
This issue may not be resolved in Season 4, but it is in the works.
Overwatch Event Challenges
Players have reported that event challenges focus too heavily on playing the event’s game mode. The Devs have changed their focus on event challenges.
They now aim to offer more opportunities to play preferred styles, while still introducing event game modes. Some of the event challenges will reflect these changes in Season 3, and the Devs will continue to monitor and adjust if necessary.
Overwatch Map Pools: The Future
Fortunately, it looks like the Overwatch team welcomes feedback and communication from players to continue improving the Overwatch experience.
