Blizzard has announced major Overwatch 2 Season 18 updates through its Defense Matrix initiative. The changes focus on fair competition, console improvements, and safer communication across the game.
Mouse and Keyboard on Consoles
For the first time, console players can use a mouse and keyboard in Overwatch 2. Players who choose this setup will be placed in the Mouse and Keyboard Pool, previously known as the PC Pool. Controller players will remain in the renamed Controller Pool.
This ensures balanced matchmaking. Aim assist is disabled in the Mouse and Keyboard Pool, even if players switch back to a controller. Anyone refusing the correct pool will have their gameplay inputs disabled. Players can also manually switch between pools in the settings menu.
Controllers on PC
PC players using controllers will still compete in the Mouse and Keyboard Pool to maintain competitive integrity.
Cracking Down on Cheating Devices
Blizzard is strengthening its fight against cheating peripherals. Over 23,000 players have already faced penalties for using unapproved devices or grouping with cheaters.
With official mouse and keyboard support now available, restrictions are harsher. Using unapproved devices in the Controller Pool will result in a full account ban, regardless of rank or mode.
Real-Time Chat Moderation
Overwatch 2 introduces real-time text moderation to reduce toxicity. Harmful or offensive chat messages will be hidden from lobbies, though players can reveal and report them if they choose.
This system, first used in World of Warcraft, helps create a safer and more welcoming environment. Blizzard warns that violations of the In-Game Code of Conduct can lead to silences, suspensions, or permanent bans.
Over One Million Cheaters Banned
The Defense Matrix team confirmed that more than 1 million Overwatch 2 accounts have been banned for cheating since launch. This includes players using hacks as well as those grouping with cheaters.
Blizzard continues to focus on making Overwatch 2 fair, fun, and competitive for all players.
