The new Civilization 7 Humankind esc Civ swap mechanic has fans worried.
Since the reveal stream of Sid Mier’s latest game, fans are both hyped and concerned for its release.
But what is the message that has got everyone up in arms?
Civilization 7 Humankind, Esc. Civ. Change Mechanic
2K recently held a gameplay reveal trailer for the upcoming Civilization 7 game. The game is set for a February 2025 release, changing the mechanics from the last one.
It has a stylish, updated look with tons of new features and modes. Also, it includes a controversial new mechanic that some fans are not liking the sound of. But the game is not out yet, so why is it making people worried?

Well, the new Civilization 7 Humanity mechanic is directly inspired by the titular strategy game. In the similar game Humanity, there is a mechanic called culture swap. After a certain number of turns and conditions are met, the player can swap their culture for another.
They could go from British to Spanish, vice versa, and so on. But this mechanic was somewhat controversial, even among Humanity fans.
However, Sid Miers must have been playing some because now we have the new Civilization 7 Humankind-inspired mechanic.

Now, after a certain amount of turns and conditions have been met, a player is entering civilization changes. Not as in the leader swaps out for another native leader; I mean, you go from Egypt to Mongolia. And to do that, you better hope you spawned next to three horses; otherwise, you are turning into Songhai!
Also, workers are no longer a unit you can use on the field. The replacement has not been detailed, but we know workers just don’t exist anymore.
This new Civilization 7 Humankind mechanism has many players not looking forward to its inclusion. Especially those who like to play a specific leader throughout the game.

The Cleopatra to Genghis Khan Pipeline Is Real
So why are players not vibing with the latest Civilization 7 Humankind-inspired mechanic? Well, first off, it’s called Sid Miers Civilization, not Humanity. That was a mechanic that was unique to humanity and honestly put a lot of people off in the first place.

The reason for that is because your empire or Civ ends up lacking identity. I am no longer a consistent Russian empire, following the ages of Russia realistically. I found a gunpowder in turn 40, and now I am Chinese!
It just comes off as a bit silly and garish to jump from one to another. Some have suggested that a native leader swap, like, say, the USA swapping George Washington for another president, would make sense. It could deliver a similar change without drastic changes to the CV. But no, we are not doing that.
Also, for those who just like playing one leader like Cleopatra, you are fresh out of luck. And depending on that RNG luck, you could end up becoming someone you dislike. Because you did not spawn next to horses, you cannot become Genghis, and so on.

But of course, every new mechanic in any Civ game has been met rather negatively. So maybe this is a case where they just need to iron out the kinks before people like it. Let’s be real: no one enjoys any Civ game on day one.
But will this Civilization 7 Humankind inspired by humanity eventually grow on people? Or will it fall like anyone attempting a religious victory in Multiplayer?
