This League of Legends support item had a large impact on teamfights and the meta since it received a series of buffs.
Moonstone Renewer ability and history
Moonstone Renewer is a support item that is primarily taken by enchantress-type champions that are good in fights, such as Nami or Karma. The reason proficiency in fights is so important with this item is because it relies on using abilities or attacks on other players to effectively activate its healing bonus. Once the user is in combat, Moonstone Renewer starts to acquire stacks that give the user a buff to their healing and shielding abilities as well as allowing them to heal low-health allies around them for a portion of their missing HP.
The ability to heal multiple targets in a long teamfight can easily sway the tides in favor of the side using Moonstone Renewer. The longer a fight lasts, the more likely it is to win for the team with this item. Most teams overlook enchantress supports in lieu of damage or tanks. However, the players who choose supports capable of taking Moonstone Renewer can better assist their team by helping them survive during tough fights and still make it out on top.
When Renewer was first released in Season 10 (Patch 10.23), it wasn’t as strong as it currently is, but it still had potential. Nevertheless, it was outshined by the release of another support item: Imperial Mandate. This item worked well on ability power-focused champions that wanted to deal as much damage as they could in a short burst and allow their allies to swoop in for easy kills.
Imperial Mandate took up most of the slots for enchantress supports, meaning that other items were often overlooked. However, the item began to take off after a series of buffs to Moonstone Renewer over the course of a few patches. Being able to heal multiple allies while in combat allows players to take skirmishes that would normally be risky. The teamfight potential with this item is evident in the games it is used in and has proven to be a much better item than it originally may have been perceived.
Why Moonstone Renewer is so powerful
Moonstone Renewer may be a fairly new item, but has shown that it has enough potential that it will likely remain relevant even after a nert. Its strength is still evident after the 11.8 patch: prior to this, the item’s passive ability allowed for it to only heal allies in combat. Now it heals for significantly less but increases the wielder’s healing and shielding power with its combat stacks. This allows the player to make the most of their supporting abilities so that they can maximize their effectiveness in fights.
Being able to heal in these types of big fights is vital, especially when in a solo queue draft. Many randomly assigned teams in these gameplay situations lack the essentials of a good composition, such as missing a tank or strong team fight power, but Moonstone Renewer can remedy that. Being able to heal multiple low-health allies in a fight as well as increase the power of their healing and shielding means that the fights can turn favorably the longer it goes on. Even without a strong frontline, just one bruiser and a support with Renewer on a team will be able to wreak havoc on opponents.
Supports, just like any role, are an integral part of the game, and making sure that the items they use reflect what these champions want to do is important. Moonstone Renewer is an item that defines enchantress supports and allows them to play to their maximum potential.
