Infinity Ward has shared new details about the evolution of DMZ in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, showcasing a significantly expanded extraction shooter experience that goes far beyond the mode’s original beta debut.
Following its reveal during the Xbox Games Showcase, developers have outlined several of the new systems coming to DMZ, including advanced crafting mechanics, a redesigned Gunsmith, persistent progression, and a deeper player-driven economy.
3D Printing Introduces a New Layer of Crafting
One of the most notable additions is the introduction of 3D Printers, a crafting system that allows players to transform resources gathered during deployments into valuable equipment.
Rather than simply looting gear, players will collect rare materials scattered throughout the game world and use them to manufacture essential items such as armor carriers, Killstreaks, and other equipment.
The system also incorporates discoverable recipes that unlock new crafting options and improve the capabilities of a player’s printer over time. These upgrades encourage exploration while giving valuable loot a more meaningful purpose beyond immediate use.
A Completely Reworked Gunsmith
Modern Warfare 4’s version of DMZ also introduces a major overhaul to the Gunsmith system.
The original beta relied heavily on insured weapon slots and cooldown timers. In the new version, weapon progression is tied directly to the mode’s economy.
Players earn currency by completing Dynamic Operations, story missions, contracts, and other objectives throughout their deployments. The money extracted from each run is stored at the player’s Forward Operating Base, where it can be invested into weapons, attachments, and future loadouts.
This approach places greater emphasis on risk and reward, as every successful extraction contributes to long-term progression.
A More Valuable Looting Experience
The redesigned economy also changes how players approach combat encounters.
As weapons are upgraded, players can spend increasing amounts of cash to unlock premium attachments, including suppressors, thermal optics, extended magazines, and specialized scopes.
Because these customized weapons require significant investment, defeating another player and claiming their gear becomes a far more meaningful reward than in previous iterations of the mode.
The result is a system where both loot and player encounters carry greater value throughout every deployment.
DMZ Embraces Its Extraction Shooter Identity
While the original DMZ beta served as Call of Duty’s first experiment with extraction-based gameplay, Infinity Ward now appears committed to establishing the mode as a fully realized extraction shooter.
Persistent inventories, long-term progression, base management, crafting systems, and economic development all play a central role in the new experience.
Players will also be able to expand and upgrade their Forward Operating Base, unlocking new functionality and improving their ability to prepare for future missions.
These systems are designed to create a stronger sense of progression between deployments, rewarding players for continued investment over time rather than focusing solely on individual matches.
Building the Most Ambitious DMZ Yet
The revamped DMZ experience represents one of Infinity Ward’s most ambitious multiplayer projects to date.
By combining extraction shooter mechanics with Call of Duty’s signature gunplay, the studio is aiming to create a mode that appeals both to longtime DMZ players and fans of the growing extraction shooter genre.
With crafting, persistent progression, player-driven economies, and extensive customization systems all arriving at launch, Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ is shaping up to be a major evolution of the formula first introduced in 2022.
