Marathon is preparing for one of its biggest updates yet with Symbiosis, a major content update arriving on Dec. 8.
Rather than continuing with the traditional seasonal model, Bungie is using Symbiosis to expand Marathon beyond its core extraction shooter experience. The update introduces new ways to play, including a permanent PvE mode and Team Deathmatch, while also overhauling the Perimeter map and adding a new Runner Shell.
Bungie says the goal is to create a more connected experience across PvPvE, PvE, and PvP, with different levels of intensity and commitment depending on how players want to approach the game.
Here’s everything coming to Marathon with the Symbiosis update.
Permanent PvE mode and Team Deathmatch
One of the biggest additions in Symbiosis is a permanent PvE mode. The new mode is designed to give players an alternative to Marathon‘s traditional extraction gameplay, providing a space to explore, experiment, and take on challenges without having to worry about the same threats found in the game’s core experience.
Bungie has yet to reveal all of the details surrounding the mode, but its permanent nature is an important part of the developer’s broader plan to expand Marathon beyond the extraction genre.
Players who prefer PvP will also have a new option with the introduction of Team Deathmatch. Unlike the higher-stakes extraction experience, TDM is designed as a straightforward, low-commitment way to jump into combat and practice PvP skills.
The mode could also provide Bungie with an opportunity to experiment with Marathon’s competitive gameplay. The developer has indicated that player feedback will help shape the future of PvP and competitive experiences in the game.
Perimeter gets a major overhaul
The Perimeter map is also receiving a significant update as part of Symbiosis.
The area is being transformed by a much more prominent fungal ecosystem, giving the familiar location a new visual identity while also changing how players navigate it. The overhaul introduces new pathways and alters existing areas, creating new opportunities for exploration and encounters.
The changes aren’t limited to aesthetics, either. Perimeter will receive its own pinnacle activity, similar to the Pinwheel activity on Outpost and the Upper Complex on Night Marsh.
At the center of the new activity is a new boss encounter against the Tick Queen. Players looking for a tougher challenge will therefore have a new objective to pursue when the updated Perimeter goes live.
Bishop is the new Runner Shell
Symbiosis also introduces a new Runner Shell called Bishop.
Bishop is designed as a fast and highly mobile robotic samurai, with its abilities centered around speed, ambushes, and burst melee damage. The Shell is built to reward aggressive players who can close the distance quickly and take advantage of short windows to deal significant damage.
Its emphasis on mobility and melee combat gives players another distinct option when choosing how they want to approach encounters in Marathon.
A new social space is also coming
Bungie has also teased a new social space arriving with Symbiosis, although more details have yet to be revealed.
The area will include a firing range, giving players a dedicated place to test weapons and potentially experiment with different loadouts before heading into a match.
Symbiosis will also introduce an improved onboarding experience, which should make it easier for new players to understand Marathon’s systems and get comfortable with its gameplay.
These additions are particularly significant as Bungie looks to broaden the game’s audience beyond players already familiar with extraction shooters.
Is the Symbiosis update free?
Yes. Like the seasonal content updates that came before it, Symbiosis is a free content update for Marathon. Players will therefore be able to access its new gameplay experiences and other additions without purchasing a separate expansion.
The update also represents a change in how Bungie plans to approach Marathon’s post-launch content. Instead of relying exclusively on a traditional seasonal structure, Symbiosis is intended to establish a broader foundation with permanent experiences that can remain part of the game.
What does Symbiosis mean for Marathon?
Symbiosis represents a significant expansion of what Marathon can offer. The core extraction experience remains central to the game, but the addition of permanent PvE and Team Deathmatch gives players alternatives depending on how much intensity and commitment they want from a session.
The Perimeter overhaul adds new reasons to revisit an existing location, while the Tick Queen provides a new pinnacle encounter. Meanwhile, Bishop introduces another specialized playstyle focused on speed and melee combat.
With the new social space and onboarding improvements also in development, Bungie appears to be building Symbiosis around accessibility and variety as much as new content.
More details about some of the update’s features are still to come, but Symbiosis launches on Dec. 8 as a free update for Marathon.
