The League of Legends bot lane meta is set for another major shake-up in Patch 26.16, as Riot Games prepares to strengthen traditional ADCs while reducing the impact of roaming supports that have fueled the rise of AP mage bot lanes.
Over recent months, champions like Ziggs, Seraphine, Swain, Veigar, Brand, and Xerath have become increasingly common in the bot lane, particularly in professional play. Riot says the strategy has added welcome variety, but the balance has now shifted too far away from marksmen.
Riot wants ADCs back at the center of bot lane
According to Lead Gameplay Designer Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison, mage bot lane picks accounted for roughly 20% of selections during MSI 2026 but have become far more common in recent tournaments, including the Esports World Cup and the KeSPA Cup. The trend has also started appearing more frequently in ranked games.
Riot explained that several balance updates throughout the season unintentionally contributed to the current meta. Earlier patches weakened ranged supports while strengthening melee supports, and players eventually found new ways to bypass anti-roaming and lane swap restrictions.
As a result, roaming supports became significantly more influential, creating an environment where AP mages could thrive in the bot lane.
While Riot wants off-meta strategies to remain viable, the developer emphasized that marksmen should continue to be the primary class for the role.
The studio also noted that professional players should not feel forced to abandon years of experience on ADC champions simply because another subclass has become the optimal choice.
At the same time, Riot believes strategic flexibility remains healthy for the game and wants teams to have meaningful drafting options without completely replacing traditional bot lane champions.
League of Legends Patch 26.16 planned ADC buffs
Rather than heavily nerfing mage champions, Riot is taking a more targeted approach in Patch 26.16.
The goal is to improve the experience for traditional ADCs while reducing the effectiveness of support roaming strategies that often enable mage bot lane compositions.
Planned Patch 26.16 changes include:
- Increased penalties for supports leaving lane early by raising out-of-lane gold and XP reductions from 25% until level 3 to 33% until level 5.
- Buffs to Berserker’s Greaves.
- Buffs to the Fleet Footwork rune.
- Increased base magic resist for ADC champions, balanced by lower magic resist growth later in the game.
- Buffs to the Heal Summoner Spell.
Riot also confirmed that additional experimental balance changes are still being tested, meaning the final Patch 26.16 notes could include further adjustments before release.
Why Riot isn’t heavily nerfing mage bot lane champions
Although mage bot lane champions have posted impressive results, Riot believes their win rates do not fully reflect their actual power.
Unlike professional matches, where mage picks often revolve around coordinated roaming support strategies, ranked games typically see these champions succeed through strong laning, poke damage, and kill pressure.
Because many mage champions are relatively straightforward to play, they can also maintain high win rates even when used by less experienced players.
For that reason, Riot doesn’t believe sweeping nerfs are necessary. Instead, the developer wants to address the systems that made the strategy so effective while allowing mage bot lane picks to remain a legitimate alternative.
What Patch 26.16 means for the bot lane meta
If the planned changes arrive as expected, Patch 26.16 should shift the bot lane back toward traditional marksmen without completely eliminating mage strategies.
Champions that benefit from Fleet Footwork, stronger survivability, and improved attack speed itemization, such as Jinx, Caitlyn, Zeri, and Kai’Sa, could become stronger picks once the patch goes live.
However, Riot has made it clear that the goal is balance rather than removing mage bot lanes entirely. Players should continue to see a mix of strategies, but with ADCs once again serving as the premier choice for the role.
