100 Thieves support huhi talked to Gamelevate in their win against Dignitas QNTMPAY about losing to Evil Geniuses in the 2022 LCS Spring Finals, his drive to reclaim the title in summer, and his two dogs: Dande and Haru.
100 Thieves dominated in the Spring Split landing themselves in the 2022 LCS Finals in Houston, Texas. However, spirits were shattered after a loss to Evil Geniuses. Now, heading into the Summer Split, the team looks to shake further fear into NA and reclaim their title. No other player looks to succeed more than Choi “huhi” Jae-hyun: who looks to return to top form and represent NA on home soil this fall at Worlds.
The following interview has been edited for length and clarity
Huhi, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us. I was just listening to your teammate Closer and he said you guys took down the final boss in Dignitas QNTMPAY. How does it feel to finally get a win against them?
It feels pretty good, especially, like Closer was already like mentioning after the game, like, we were kind of joking that we were more nervous versus them versus EG just because we kind of never beat them in like the regular split. So it feels pretty good to finally beat them.
The last time I saw you were in Houston. And I know, losing is always difficult especially when you’re playing in front of a giant crowd. I want to get your thoughts on how the offseason was following the defeat against Evil Geniuses?
The finals versus evil geniuses, especially in the big crowds, it hit me and my team pretty hard, in my opinion. There was some tears after the games and we were kind of like, pretty sad about it, because our season is over. And now we cannot show like, what we can do better until the next splits starts. And also the finals itself was 3-0 like we got pretty hard stomped. So yeah, I think we’re just using that as a motivation going into this split. And we don’t want to feel the same way again. And we want to be on their side this time. And so I think people are putting more work and more fire into this split. And I think overall, it will help us more.
One of the things that kind of has been motivating a lot of teams obviously is Worlds implications. You are no stranger to the world stage, having been there on two different teams with CLG and 100 Thieves. What’s motivating you this Summer Split?
I think what’s motivating me is, first of all, taking the championship title back in the LCS, and also especially Worlds is being held in NA this time. So I’m really hoping that we can qualify and represent in North America.finally, to be out of the group stage. And I think that will be a huge accomplishment for myself. And yeah, I think that’s my biggest motivation right now.
I want to ask about the durability update. Riot obviously implemented so many different balance changes. Support is in an interesting position where we’ve been seeing a lot of tanks and enchanters. Without giving anything away, can you talk to me about how the durability updates have influenced the support position?
I think in support position, what happened is that there’s just a lot more variety of champions that’s being played around. Like you already mentioned, there’s lots of enchanter. They’re still like the tanks, the old school like the Nautilus, Leona. I feel like it’s just up to your comfortability, and what kind of like, team play style you have. You have more like room to pick your champions. And we’ve been seeing some, like some crazy picks, for example, in LCK, like, Keria (of T1) playing Yasuo support. I won’t go that far. But I think there’s a lot more variety there.
I mean you were a former mid laner and Keria did play Yasuo. Do you think you can play it?
I have other things in mind that I really want to pull off. And I’m really confident that so in a way to do that as well.
I still want you to play Aurelion Sol support but that’s just me. Another popular champion is Senna. I know Senna has been popular as an AD Carry, but in the LEC, we’ve been seeing some of the supports play Senna while the tank position goes to the AD. Do you think this is something more teams should implement or do you think it should be the AD Carry who is sticking to that champion?
I think it’s just based on like the players comfortability. For example on our team, I think me and FBI have a pretty good balance. I am more comfortable on this champion. He’s more comfortable on certain champions. So we will just we can both play Senna so we will just do whatever makes sense. I think we’re pretty flexible around it. So I think that’s one of our strengths as well.
