Rocket League is a stacked and hyper-competitive game. But, for those few among us who are able to hit the Diamond and Platinum standard, the rewards for hitting the higher levels can be awesome. Join us here at Gamelevate as we run you through some of the best guides on how to rank up in Rocket League.
Know Your Opponents
‘Know thy enemy’ is one of the most over-used cliches in the world but, in the case of Rocket League, it has more truth than in most cases.
Within the first few exchanges of a ranked game in Rocket League, you’ll get a decent idea of how good your opponents are. Do they fly around like a madman attempting all the highlight shots? Play the toxic game of booting you around the pitch? Or are they actually reasonably competent players who can judge where the ball is going, and what plays you are attempting?
Taking a few seconds to consider your opponent’s skill level will help you quickly develop a blueprint for how you’re going to play a match.
Play On The Wall
We mentioned it above, but the Esports grade plays off the wall and almost never works with most players. If you want to rank up in Rocket League, you’re better off ditching those plays in favor of keeping things far simpler by playing on the wall.
Even in the upper echelons of Diamond rank, you’ll be amazed at how much impact an interception on the wall can have. It can swing momentum, lob the ball in the right direction and, given how prevalent the ‘compilation players’ are, isn’t nearly as competitive as you would think.
Use The Backboard
A little basic Maths goes a long way in Rocket League. The Backboard either side of both goals is the best way of either centering the ball back for your teammates or getting a clearance away from your own net.
And yet, spending even just one game in Rocket League will reveal how many people neglect this simple strategy. With the different shapes of the cars and the finicky camera angles players have to work with, it’s so easy to misplace a shot or even put the ball in your own net.

Pass Forward And Backward
It’s easy to forget sometimes, but Rocket League is a game where you have teammates who should, in theory, be working with you.
And having a team that is actually all working together, taking up good positions on the pitch rather than all jostling to punt the ball any which way, is often enough to get a win in ranked.
And sometimes, the best way of working with your team is by occasionally passing the ball away from your opponent’s goal. If your teammate is in a better position to take a shot, don’t be the toxic guy going for glory all the time.
Gamble On The 50/50s
No high-ranked player will ever admit it, but missing the ball in Rocket League is a frighteningly common occurrence.
Ask any striker in real-world soccer, and they will tell you the vast majority of the goals they score come from being in the right place at the right time, and gambling on the defenders not clearing their lines. A sort of ‘you miss, I hit’ mentality.
Rather than chasing after the ball like a madman, take the time to pre-empt where the play is developing, and where the ideal place for you to be is in a best-case scenario. You’ll be amazed how many times the ball falls to you just in front of the net.
