We’ve come up with a complete beginner’s guide on things you need to understand to get started with Riot’s popular first-person shooter. Here’s everything you need to know on how to play Valorant.
How to play Valorant: the basics
Every day, more and more people are getting on Valorant’s hype train and trying the popular first-person shooter out. Because of that, we’ve decided to develop a complete beginner’s guide on how to play Valorant.
This is everything you’re going to need to know if you want to either get started on your climb up the competitive ranks of Valorant or want to play casually.
Personalize the way you play

Pick a role/agent
In Valorant, there are four primary agent roles. They are Duelist, Initiator, Controller, and Sentinel. While the tutorial will have you using Sova, we recommend going through the different agents and discovering which role and playstyle best fit you.
- Duelists: Reyna, Jett, Raze, Phoenix, Yoru are Valorant’s duelists. These agents are expected to be the team’s lead/entry fraggers and space creators. Duelists are expected to be aggressive and take the fight to the enemy to ensure that your team gets the advantage – especially on attack.
- Initiator: Sova, Skye, Breach, and KAY/O are the initiators. For the most part, these agents are all about gathering information and dictating the game’s pace based on said information.
- Controller: Omen, Brimstone, Astra, and Viper are the game’s controllers. Simply put, controllers are smokers. With their valuable utilities, these agents literally “control” how players navigate the maps.
- Sentinels: Killjoy, Sage, and Cypher are your sentinels. These agents are essentially Valorant’s defensive specialists. Their abilities are used to hold a site or hold flanks and off angles.
Find your mouse sensitivity
You need to make sure you have the proper mouse sensitivity that matches how you shoot best. Make sure to customize your mouse’s DPI or dots per inch settings. Most first-person shooter enthusiasts will say that 800 dpi is the standard. We recommend that you start with this, then adjust the in-game sensitivity accordingly.
Find your ideal crosshair
Valorant’s recent update has introduced the option of saving crosshair profiles. You’ll see the crosshair tab if you go to settings in Valorant. You can adjust the color, inner and outer line lengths, center dot, and more here. We recommend turning off the fire and movement error, so you get a better understanding of how to shoot in the game.
