Ever since its arrival to the Fifa series with roughly 1 million players in Fifa 09, Ultimate Team has become one of the most recognizable features of the franchise. The ability to create the team of your dreams has proven to be a winning formula with fans, and EA have only expanded upon this success by introducing an arsenal’s worth of new game modes, unlockables, features, and packs that have all seen the company become synonymous with microtransactions and the ‘pay to win’ label.
Nevertheless, the Ultimate Team train doesn’t appear to be slowing down as Fifa 23 looms on the horizon. To help give you a better idea of the popularity of the game mode, Gamelevate takes you through the Fifa 22 Ultimate Team player count, and how good it has been this year.
How Many Active Players Does Fifa 22 Ultimate Team Have?
According to most Esports charts designed to monitor the player count for the world’s most popular titles, Fifa 22 has averaged around nine million players across all the consoles and platforms it has been available on.
The game did see a big jump in activity across May 2022 however, with Fifa 22 becoming free to play for both Xbox and PlayStation users.
It was the first time a Fifa title had been moved to a free-to-play model during its spell in the limelight, and the results were more dramatic than one might have thought. Across March and April 2022, Fifa 22’s average player count dropped -10.34% and -5.44, with a peak player count of 76,713 and 69,366 respectively.
Roll forward to May and June 2022, and the game’s average player count has jumped up +23.37% and +10.64 with a peak player record of 108,168 and 103,195.
However, working out how many unique players are taking part in each game mode is difficult, especially in Ultimate Team where players can delete clubs and start over. The best guess we have is in a quote released by EA earlier this year:
“Since launch, we’ve already had 9.1 million players join the game, 7.6 million Ultimate Team squads created and 460 million matches played. We will continue delivering amazing experiences throughout this season, but first – a heartfelt thank you to our incredible community of football fans.”
Knowing EA, that ‘7.6 million Ultimate Team squads’ is probably a culmination of every squad put together by every user, rather than one unique count per player.
How Good Is FUT 22?
Upon release, EA lauded Fifa 22 as being the biggest leap forward the series had had for years. And new AI technologies, upgrades to gameplay mechanics and a number of updates to what setups and styles of play would be dominant in the competitive meta certainly helped make the game feel unique.
And this warmer reception of the game has also translated over to FUT 22 this year as well. Whilst Ultimate Team hasn’t done too many things differently in years gone by, it has benefitted from a far less punishing Division Rivals ladder and some more enjoyable SBC challenges.
The intuitive gameplay mechanics and slowed-down competitive meta have led to most players agreeing that FUT 22 has encouraged less ‘jammy’ and unfair-feeling matches online.
