Epic Games has confirmed that Fortnite’s cooperative PvE mode Save the World will officially become free-to-play on April 16. The move opens the long-running mode to a much wider audience across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, cloud platforms, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
The shift marks a major change for the mode, which originally launched as a paid experience nearly a decade ago.
Pre-Registration Rewards for New Players
To celebrate the transition, Epic Games is introducing a pre-registration campaign. Players who sign up before launch can unlock in-game rewards depending on the total number of participants.
Among the rewards available to pre-registered players is a Save the World Hero, encouraging newcomers to jump into the cooperative survival mode with a head start.
Save the World focuses on team-based missions where players defend objectives, gather resources, and fight back against waves of enemies known as the Storm.
Rewards for Existing Players
Epic Games is also recognizing longtime players who have supported the mode over the past nine years. When the free-to-play transition goes live on April 16, current players will receive several in-game bonuses including:
- Superchargers
- Vouchers
- Gold
Players who purchased Founder’s Editions will continue to receive V-Bucks through Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, Storm Shield Defense missions, and previously available challenges.
Purchases Paused Ahead of Launch
To prepare for the transition, Epic Games has paused new purchases of Save the World starting March 11. However, existing players can continue playing the mode normally while the development team prepares for the free-to-play launch.
With the barrier to entry removed, Epic hopes to introduce the cooperative experience to a new generation of Fortnite players.
