The latest Fortnite hotfix brings a new protective item, the Guardian Shield to Battle Royale and this guide will help you use it. The patch also adds new, earnable rewards via Midseason Drops!
OK, we’re not saying Epic would ever copy another game. However, doesn’t the new Guardian Shield look at least a little like an Overwatch character? Add the hammer and you’re getting pretty darn close to Reinhardt.

To be fair, the graphics for weapons and items in a variety of games are starting to converge. For example, there are a finite amount of rifle or shotgun graphics that are available to designers.
PROTECT THE SQUAD WITH THE GUARDIAN SHIELD
With swords flying and hammers slamming, a little extra cover goes a long way.
Findable from Oathbound Chests, the Guardian Shield deploys a protective barrier in front of you which blocks incoming damage. Basically, this shield can be raised as a mobile cover while you and the squad are on the move. In addition, you can throw it to the ground for stationary, sustained protection.
The barrier won’t last forever, so keep your eyes on the shield’s changing color to indicate when it’s about to run out!
Guardian Shield Guide and Strategy
The shield is great for stopping bullets and hammer strikes. Nevertheless, opponents can run right through the shield. Therefore, a smart opponent will run behind you and then strike the hammer behind your Guardian Shield.
The way to counter that is to mirror your opponent’s movement by going backward. This will cause them to have to stay in front of your protective shield.
Essentially, the Guardian Shield looks to be most effective in duos, trios, and squads. This is especially true in the No Build modes. That’s because the person who throws the shield can’t shoot through it. However, teammates can use the shield to take peek shots at the enemy and then retreat back behind it when they get counter-attacked.
Guardian Shields in Competitive
It will be interesting to see how competitive Fortnite players use this new Guardian Shield meta when they are all boxed up. It could be a great way to get surge tags without taking too much damage.
