KOEI TECMO America and developer Team NINJA have announced that a playable demo for FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE will launch on March 5, 2026, giving players an early taste of the reimagined survival horror classic. The demo will be available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC via Steam®, with Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders now officially open.
Alongside the demo news, KOEI TECMO also revealed an upcoming collaboration with SILENT HILL f, the newest entry in Konami’s iconic psychological horror franchise. New details about the remake were shared as well, further highlighting how the studio is modernizing one of the most beloved entries in the FATAL FRAME series.
Originally released as the second game in the franchise, FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu as they wander into a cursed, abandoned village haunted by vengeful spirits. Armed only with the Camera Obscura, a mystical device capable of capturing and sealing ghosts, players must confront terrifying apparitions while uncovering the village’s tragic past.
The remake introduces several new gameplay additions, including fresh side stories, new locations, and a brand-new ending featuring the song “Utsushie” composed by series favorite Tsuki Amano. Players can explore eerie new areas such as the Umbral Mound, a rope-bound burial site hidden within bamboo groves, and the haunting halls of Eikado Temple, home to twin statues bound by sacred cords.
New mechanics deepen both combat and storytelling. Broken Spirit Stones allow players to relive memories from key characters, expanding the game’s lore, while enemies become more aggressive as spirits enter a crimson, empowered state that boosts their strength and regeneration. To survive, players can enhance the Camera Obscura using Prayer Beads, adjust upgrades with Reversion Beads, and utilize new Special Shots through different filters that alter combat strategy.
Beyond combat, the Camera Obscura can also be used to photograph Twin Dolls scattered throughout Minakami Village. Purifying these dolls by capturing them together unlocks new rewards and items, adding an emotional layer to exploration. A newly added Photo Mode allows players to capture haunting moments using frames, stickers, and visual effects, sometimes revealing spirits lurking just outside plain sight.
The horror experience grows even darker with the newly announced SILENT HILL f collaboration, which will introduce special collaboration costumes as free downloadable content at a later date. Additional details on this crossover will be revealed in the coming weeks.
FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is set to launch on March 12, 2026, featuring Japanese and English voiceovers and support for multiple languages, including English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
