Amid some concerns over the use of NFTs in gaming, popular YouTuber Dr. Disrespect and his game studio Midnight Society have introduced Deadrop.
Deadrop is an upcoming first-person shooter that offers optional NFTs called “Founders Passes” for exclusive access and perks.

The year is 2020.b – 40 years into the Climate Wars, population and pollution levels skyrocket. Cities erect massive REFINER STATES – megastructures built to extract toxins from the stratosphere.
These towers are self-governed “city-states” with only one export – SPACE DUST. A concentrate from the refined pollutants is bricked, cut, and sold to an addicted populous of the sprawling urban cities surrounding the structure.
Once Government-owned facilities, the lucrative ‘DUST’ trade has now led to the forced occupation of the REFINER STATES by competing factions fighting for control of the towers and the resources inside.
These factions compete against the occupying force of Cleaners who operate the Refiner State in a never-ending struggle for resources and gear.

Dr. Disrespect’s Deadrop Debuts to Massive Audience Despite NFT Controversy
Deadrop’s pre-alpha stage saw significant interest during the recent public play-test event.
Esports stars such as Dr. Lupo, Scump, and Zlaner participated in the three-hour event alongside Dr. Disrespect.
The play-test was staged at the Esports Stadium in Arlington, Texas. With impressive in-person attendance and thousands of concurrent viewers on live streams, the game’s NFT features did not deter its massive audience.
Founders Pass NFTs: Opt-In Perks Without In-Game Advantages
To address potential concerns, Dr. Disrespect’s Founders Pass NFTs do not alter the gameplay experience. Instead, these 10,000 limited edition NFTs serve as a membership pass. They grant holders exclusive in-game items, voting rights, access to events, priority for merchandise, and more.
The current floor price for a Founders Pass is 0.4 ETH, which at today’s Ethereum price is roughly $717.
Message from the Game Developer
Midnight Society has addressed the NFT aspect of the game quite transparently. Their messaging indicates that Deadrop can be played without having to partake in any of the underlying blockchain technology. Here is a sample of their messaging:
“There are two core facts we want to make very clear to all of our audience, including those who embrace decentralization and those who want absolutely nothing to do with it;
Midnight Society is for all of us.
What that means is that at no point will you be limited from playing or enjoying our game because you chose one path or another.
If you want to have a completely centralized account, play the game, unlock items tied to your account which you use, and enjoy as you normally would, that is completely fine.
If you want to have a decentralized account, where you are the custodian of everything you own and able to sell them outside Midnight Society on the open market, you are free to do so.”
Dr. Disrespect Deadrop’s Gameplay: Unique PVPVE Experience with Retro Aesthetic
During the pre-alpha gameplay test, Midnight Society co-founder and former “Halo” developer Quinn DelHoyo showcased Deadrop’s unique PVPVE (player-vs-player-vs-environment) experience.
With its vertical challenges and 1980s-1990s-inspired aesthetics, Deadrop offers a distinct gaming experience. This is compared to popular battle royales like Call of Duty: Warzone and Apex Legends.
Teaming and NFT-Related Concerns Surrounding Deadrop
One unique aspect of Deadrop is its encouragement of “teaming”. The concept of teaming refers to instances when players form groups and agree not to eliminate each other. This feature, however, raises potential issues such as friendly fire and betrayal.
Overall, despite some concerns, the event maintained a strong focus on the game’s innovative features, such as teaming, rather than its NFT elements.
