Alec Dawson, Game Director for Overwatch 2, recently shared some insights in a new Director’s Take. This time, the focus was not just on what’s new—but how the team cares for the game’s foundation while building exciting content.
A Season of Big Moves
Over the past few months, Overwatch 2 has added major features. The new Perks system changed gameplay. The Stadium mode launched with strong reception. Hero Bans added fresh strategy to Competitive.
It’s a big moment for the game. The team is thrilled, and they hope players feel the same.
The Garden Metaphor
Alec used a metaphor to explain the team’s philosophy. Think of Overwatch 2 as a garden. New content is like flowers blooming. But the developers also act as gardeners. They maintain every system behind the scenes.
That means fixing bugs, reworking Heroes, and polishing older features. The goal is to make sure everything feels better each time players return.
Why Come Back? Why Stay?
Every new season is built with two goals in mind. It should give players a reason to return. And it should give them a reason to stay.
A new Hero or mode gets attention. But things like ranked tuning or quality-of-life updates keep players engaged. The devs want every visit to Overwatch to feel better than the last.
Season 9 and the upcoming Season 15 are examples of this. These early-year seasons often bring the biggest changes. More details on next year’s plans are still in the works.
Stronger Systems, Smarter Updates
Mid-year seasons, like Season 18, often focus on core systems. They may not look flashy, but they make gameplay smoother and smarter.
Before that, Season 17 will introduce Aatlis, a new Flashpoint map. It will also add Map Voting, giving players more control. This feature will help the team understand what maps players like—or avoid.
Map reworks are also coming. Suravasa and New Junk City are getting updates. These changes are based on player feedback and lessons learned from earlier designs.
Perks Get an Upgrade
Season 18 will bring a major update to the Perks system. Every Hero will have something new to experiment with. Major Perks will feel more powerful and game-changing. Some do that already, but others will get better with this update.
Listening to the Community
The team knows they’re adding a lot in a short time. But they remain committed to balance. Features like Hero Bans and Map Voting help them track which Heroes and maps need updates.
For example, Sombra’s high ban rate signals she may need changes. After buffs, Freja’s sudden spike in bans triggered a hotfix. This kind of data helps guide future updates.
Feedback is always welcome. The Overwatch team wants to hear from players. They ask themselves often—are we adding too much? Do we need to shift focus?
The devs want to grow the game without losing its roots. That means delivering fun new experiences and taking care of what’s already there.
