Today, Cloud9 have officially announced the departure of their coaches Alfonso “Mithy” Aguirre Rodriguez, and Jonathan “Westrice” Nguyen.
Cloud9 are rebuilding their main and academy roster for the upcoming season. At first, we have seen them making changes on both rosters, and now it is time for the coaching staff. According to the latest announcement, the team have parted ways with their academy coach Westrice and main coach Mithy.
Back in his G2 Esports days, Mithy used to be one of the best support players in the region. After playing for TSM and Origen, he decided to retire and become a coach. His first stop was Fnatic where he reached Worlds Quarterfinals. He then joined Cloud9 and won the league alongside his colleague Kim “Reignover” Yeu-jin.
Westrice has been active in the scene since 2011. He played for many different teams in the past including TSM, Team Curse, compLexity Gaming, CLG Black, and Cloud9. In 2017, he joined Cloud9’s coaching staff. He coached Cloud9 Academy for three years and got promoted to the main coaching staff. However, he worked with both main and academy rosters in 2020. C9 Academy reached NA Academy 2021 Summer Finals but couldn’t win the title against Team Liquid. He was one of the main reasons that Jonah “Isles” Rosario made it to the main roster as he worked with the support player together.
According to today’s announcement, Cloud9 won’t continue their way with Westrice, and Mithy. Instead, they have promoted Zixing “Tails” Jie from Cloud9 Amateur to the academy. Tails will be the new coach for the academy team.
On the other hand, Cloud9 haven’t announced their main coach yet. It is expected that they will announce it in the upcoming days.
