Turn timer is finally up and the Civilization 7 Test Of Time update dropped today!
Firaxis Game’s latest strategy game has released a very long-awaited feature.
But has this “fixed” the game finally or is it still missing that special something?
Civilization 7 Test Of Time Update
Firstly, yes, the Civilization 7 Test Of Time update lets you play as one Civ. Instead of changing civilizations throughout the game, you can just stick as one. So, no more jumping from Rome to Huns then Japan if you want.
Although this sounds like something that should have been there from the start… It was not. Finally, you can play out historically accurate or inaccurate playthroughs!
This new feature alone sells the game for a lot of fans not happy with 7. However, they have added in a lot of needed reworks and fixes with this 1.4.0 update.

Secondly, the unliked legacy paths mechanic has been replaced with Triumphs. Triumphs work as little mini goals throughout the game that reward persistent players with permanent buffs.

These triumphs are split into separate categories, being Military, Science, Economic, Cultural, Diplomatic, and Explorationist. Kind of like Civ 6’s golden age milestones, players that say explore the globe first get rewarded. But other more unique triumphs like holding a war at 2 fronts or capturing a certain number of cities are also in the mix.
This new Civilization 7 Test Of Time addition makes the playthroughs more flexible. Depending on how you want to win, you can aim towards specific triumphs throughout the game.

Thirdly, on the topic of winning the victory system has been overhauled. Military victory is achieved through earning dominion points for each settlement under your control. Cultural works, much like Civ 6 based on tourism and celebrations. Economic is earned by gaining the fattest stacks through the ages and slotting treasure convoys.

Lastly Scientific stays the same with a space race to the first colony.
Update The Great
Also, everyone gets with the Civilization 7 Test Of Time update the free leader Alexander the Great! Along with him come much-needed UI / UX bug fixes and adjustments.
Now you can properly se trade routes and how they benefit your civ. Meanwhile, the empire overview is not a huge mess and resources are easier to read.
Also, not to mention a ton of balance changes, new music, textures and the fractal content map.
However, is all of this really enough to make CIV 7 a good Civ game? Honestly, I have not played enough to fully answer that question. It is definitely better but there are still some core issues that cannot be fixed.
Much like how fundamentally Heat changes Tekken the flow of Civ 7 is just really odd. Some people definitely enjoy it but the numbers on Steam show that Civ 6 is the reigning champ. There are still no true start maps, the leader choices are downright questionable.
Overall, yeah, its better and maybe worth a try. But the Civilization 7 Test Of Time is definitely a step in the right direction.
However, the biggest improvement is just the devs walking back on the vision of the game itself.
