The BG3 best Paladin subclass requires Paladins to deeply think on their vows and choose what it means to uphold their oath.
At level 1, Paladins choose an oath they must uphold to maintain their powers as righteous warriors of a greater power.
This oath dictates what the Paladin must protect, defend and punish with their Divine Smite. Failure to uphold this oath will strip the Paladin of their signature Channel Oath class feature.
But there might be an alternate path available to those whose actions take them away from their vows…
In BG3, the best Paladin subclass is one of the three starting Oaths and one hidden fourth option.
4) Oath of Devotion
These Paladins primarily have a supportive skillset. They buff and protect their allies and can provide extra utility.
With spells like Sanctuary, Lesser Restoration, Silence, and Remove Curse, these Paladins have a nice breadth of options.

The main weakness of these Paladins is that their skillset is largely obsolete when compared to the Clerics, who have much better spellbooks and can learn higher-level spells.
Anything a Paladin with the Devotion subclass can do in BG3, a Cleric can do better.
3) Oath of the Ancients
These divine defenders of the natural order are identifiable for their healing and their control of the natural world.
They can create plants to control terrain, summon Moonbeams, and can Speak to Animals to chat with local fauna.

While aesthetically similar to a blend of Cleric and Druid in BG3, Paladins of the Ancient subclass can still get some individual synergy from their ensnaring spells.
Using plants to hold down an enemy to get an advantage on their Smite against them is what makes Ancients Paladins stand out for big damage numbers.
2) Oath of Vengeance
The Paladin class is most suited to punish the wicked, Vengeance Paladins are all about smiting for massive damage.
Their spells all increase their direct damage or make it easier to land hits on their foes.

Bane, Hunter’s Mark, Hold Person, and especially Haste stand out as spells to ensure that no evildoer goes unpunished.
This lack of versatility does mean that Vengeance Paladins aren’t as good team players, but they don’t need to be. As the saying goes, the best form of crowd control is death.
The Oathbreaker is a hidden path for Paladins of any of the previous three subclasses. If a Paladin breaks their oath by making certain decisions in quests, they will lose their divine powers.
Fortunately, the Oathbreaker Knight will appear at camp to grant the Paladin a new path of power: one fueled by the dark shadows rather than the radiant light.
What makes the Oathbreaker the best Paladin subclass in BG3 is its devastating debuffs. Spiteful Suffering, Inflict Wounds, Crown of Madness and Bestow Curse are all excellent spells to debilitate foes.
The most important ability though is Aura of Hate at level 7, which almost pays for the entire subclass on its own.
A passive aura emanating from the Oathbreaker Paladin causes the Paladin and nearby fiends/undead to deal extra damage on melee attacks.
Oathbreakers can also summon an undead ally with Animate Dead at level 9.
With access to one of the best AOE buffs and the best skill in summons, it’s no surprise that the Oathbreaker Paladin is the best BG3 Paladin subclass.
