Been wondering what the best Minecraft education mods are?
Mojang’s blockbuster sandbox game is widely played not only for entertainment but for education as well.
But let’s explore why and what the best mods are…
Why Does Minecraft have Education Mods
Minecraft developed by Swedish developers Mojang directed by Notch, was released back in 2009.
Ever since then, it has become a global success, with almost 140 million players active daily.
Although it is played by millions casually, it has been adopted by academic organisations as well.
Utilising the accessibility of both design and coding, many places have created their own mods. These mods are aimed at changing the game into a more educational-focused tool.
With both schools and universities utilising the game for education, it has proven to be a worthwhile tool for education.
These mods and versions listed are not all compatible with each other and vary depending on the version of release. We can always download the correct version via the client, of course.
MinecraftEdu

In 2011, an educational organization named MinecraftEdu was formed with the goal of introducing Minecraft into schools. The group works with Mojang to make the game affordable and accessible to schools. The version of Minecraft through MinecraftEdu includes unique features to allow teachers to monitor the students’ progress within the virtual world, such as receiving screenshots from students to show completion of a lesson.
This is its own standalone version of the game sold seperatley. It has full support and its own modding scene but does require monthly payments.
LearnToMod

LearnToMod is an educational platform that offers a browser-based modding environment for Minecraft.
It provides an intuitive interface for beginners to learn the basics of programming through Minecraft modding. By combining coding lessons with gameplay, LearnToMod makes learning to code fun and accessible.
WorldPainter

WorldPainter isn’t just a mod, but rather a powerful map generator that allows users to create custom Minecraft worlds. This tool is particularly useful for history and geography lessons, as it enables the recreation of historical landscapes or the generation of unique terrains for geography lessons.
ChemCraft

ChemCraft brings chemistry to Minecraft, allowing players to experiment with various chemical elements and compounds. This mod introduces a wide array of chemical reactions, making it a fantastic tool for teaching basic chemistry concepts in an interactive and engaging manner.
MathMod

MathMod is a mod that aims to turn Minecraft into a dynamic math classroom. It provides a range of mathematical tools, including calculators, graphing functions, and geometric shape generators. This mod helps students explore and apply mathematical concepts in a hands-on virtual environment.
HistoriCraft

HistoriCraft is a mod designed specifically for history enthusiasts. It allows players to explore historically accurate environments and experience key moments from the past. With detailed recreations of ancient civilizations and landmarks, HistoriCraft offers an immersive way to learn about history.
Code Connection
Code Connection is a powerful tool that integrates Minecraft with Microsoft’s coding platform, MakeCode. It enables players to learn and apply coding skills in Minecraft, opening up endless possibilities for creating interactive experiences and solving challenges through programming.
Biomes O’ Plenty

While not explicitly an educational mod, Biomes O’ Plenty adds a vast array of new biomes to Minecraft. Also this mod can be a valuable tool for teaching environmental science and geography, as it allows students to explore and compare different ecosystems within the game.
Minecraft on its own is already a great source of education for players. Teaching players the importance of eating and sleeping and avoiding people at night!
