Fans of Baldur’s Gate 3 have a new story to look forward to, as an official prequel novel centered on one of the game’s most popular companions has been revealed.
The upcoming book will be written by T. Kingfisher and will explore the backstory of Astarion, diving deeper into his life before the events of the critically acclaimed RPG.
A deeper look at Astarion’s origins
The novel is set to expand on Astarion’s past, offering fans more insight into his journey prior to joining the main cast of Baldur’s Gate 3. Known for his charm, complexity, and morally gray personality, Astarion quickly became a fan-favorite companion, making him a natural choice for a dedicated story.
While the game provides glimpses into his history, the prequel aims to flesh out those details in a more focused narrative, potentially exploring his life under vampiric control and the experiences that shaped his character.
What we know so far
Details about the book are still limited, but early listings suggest it will release in 2026. Information regarding pricing and availability may vary depending on region and retailer, and there’s currently no confirmation on additional language versions.
As an officially licensed project, the novel will serve as an extension of the Baldur’s Gate universe, giving players and readers another way to engage with its characters beyond the game itself.
Expanding the Baldur’s Gate universe
Since its release, Baldur’s Gate 3 has built a massive following thanks to its deep storytelling, player choice, and memorable cast. Expanding the universe through a prequel novel signals continued investment in the franchise’s narrative potential.
For fans of Astarion, this book represents a chance to explore his story in greater depth, something that the game, with its branching paths and player-driven choices, can only partially reveal.
