HyperVR Games’ chaotic prison sandbox will launch on Meta Quest and PlayStation VR2, with a SteamVR release planned for later.
Escaping prison is rarely a straightforward process, but Bad Inmate is ready to make it considerably more chaotic. HyperVR Games has announced that its physics-driven prison escape simulator will launch on Meta Quest and PlayStation VR2 on October 15, 2026.
Developed by the studio behind Shave & Stuff and Titans Clinic, Bad Inmate puts players inside a prison sandbox where freedom is the ultimate objective. However, there is no single solution to breaking out. Players will need to experiment with their surroundings, interact with fellow inmates and improvise their way past the prison’s security.
Plan Your Escape Your Way
In Bad Inmate, players are guided by an inmate ally whose intelligence is matched by an unpredictable personality. Escaping means sneaking past guards, stealing keys, navigating hidden passages and turning everyday objects into useful tools.
The game’s physics-based systems are designed to make each attempt feel different. Players can pick up, throw, hide and manipulate objects throughout the environment, potentially transforming an ordinary item into the key to their escape.
That freedom also means plans can quickly go wrong. What starts as a carefully prepared operation can turn into an elaborate prank or a full-scale prison disaster.
Life Behind Bars
Escape planning isn’t the only activity available in Bad Inmate. Players can also experience various aspects of prison life while deciding how to approach their eventual breakout.
Inmates have their own agendas and relationships, giving players opportunities to trade favors, form alliances or make enemies. The prison yard also offers activities such as basketball, pull-ups and weightlifting, all designed around immersive VR interaction.
Players can even get involved in a moonshine operation, adding another layer of risk and opportunity to the prison sandbox.
Fight, Craft and Improvise
When negotiations fail, Bad Inmate lets players rely on a physics-driven, full-contact combat system. Almost anything in the environment can potentially become part of a fight, turning everyday objects into improvised weapons.
The crafting system expands those possibilities further. Players can combine and repurpose objects to create new tools, potentially finding unconventional solutions to problems standing between them and freedom.
According to HyperVR Games, the experience is built around experimentation, with players encouraged to find their own approach rather than follow a predetermined escape route.
