The retro-inspired spy shooter launches on Steam on August 11, with console versions planned for a later date.
Fans of classic first-person shooters are getting a nostalgic treat this summer as Agent 64: Spies Never Die prepares to launch on PC. Developed by solo creator Replicant D6, the retro-inspired espionage shooter arrives on Steam on August 11, 2026, delivering a modern take on the fast-paced action that defined the Nintendo 64 era.
While the game launches on PC first, the developer has also confirmed that console versions are in development, although a release date has yet to be announced.
A Love Letter to Classic Spy Shooters
Agent 64: Spies Never Die pays tribute to iconic spy-themed shooters from the late 1990s while introducing modern gameplay improvements.
Players step into the polished shoes of secret agent John Walter, who embarks on a globe-trotting mission to stop the schemes of the villainous Dominic Pulp. Throughout the campaign, players will infiltrate enemy facilities, rescue hostages, recover classified intelligence, and eliminate dangerous operatives across a variety of missions.
Rather than following a strictly linear approach, many objectives can be completed in different orders, giving players the freedom to tackle missions using stealth, firepower, or a combination of both.
Fourteen Missions Packed With Action
The single-player campaign features 14 story missions that can also be played cooperatively.
Each mission includes multiple objectives and increasing difficulty levels, encouraging replayability with unlockable content such as additional maps and cosmetic skins.
Players can engage enemies using a wide arsenal of weapons ranging from traditional firearms like machine guns to futuristic plasma rifles and explosive gadgets. Protective equipment, including body armor, also plays an important role in surviving increasingly difficult encounters.
Multiplayer Brings Back Split-Screen Fun
One of Agent 64’s biggest highlights is its focus on classic multiplayer gameplay.
Local split-screen supports up to four players, while online multiplayer allows matches with up to eight human participants alongside AI-controlled bots.
Several competitive modes will be available at launch, including traditional Deathmatch, objective-based Zone battles, and Briefcase mode, where players compete to hold sensitive intelligence for as long as possible.
The multiplayer experience is clearly inspired by the couch gaming era that helped define an entire generation of shooters.
Custom Matches With Classic Cheats
Agent 64 also embraces one of the most beloved features from classic console games: built-in cheats.
Players can customize matches using more than 70 gameplay modifiers, including oversized character heads, slower-moving bullets, random weapon rotations, melee-only battles, and numerous other options designed to create unpredictable and entertaining matches.
Instead of treating these features as downloadable content, they’re included as part of the core experience from day one.
Modern Features Meet Retro Gameplay
Although Agent 64 draws heavy inspiration from the golden age of console shooters, it isn’t simply recreating the past.
The game combines retro visuals and mission design with modern improvements such as online multiplayer, smoother controls, and updated mechanics inspired by contemporary action films.
The result is a shooter that aims to capture the charm of classic espionage games while remaining accessible to today’s players.
Launch Date
Agent 64: Spies Never Die launches on PC via Steam on August 11, 2026, with support for English, French, and Japanese. Console versions are also planned, with additional release details expected after the PC launch.
