Baptiste, while a rather difficult hero to play optimally, is fairly unique in his playstyle. Not only does he want to heal his allies with abilities like Regenerative Burst, but he also wants to increase his and his team’s damage with abilities like Amplification Matrix. In this regard, he is similar to heroes like Ana, but with his special twist. Baptiste wants to be in the thick of fights with his team, lobbing out healing and damage with his Biotic Launcher and using his Exo Boots to increase his mobility. Baptiste can certainly be a strong hero when in the right hands, but he can also still be beaten. To help players better prepare for this matchup, here are 3 Overwatch heroes that counter Baptiste.
Baptiste counter #3: Roadhog
For players looking for a tank hero to pick into Baptiste, Roadhog is at the top of the list. Since Baptiste can easily heal allies over time with his Regenerative Burst, his ideal counter would be able to deal enough burst damage to get through that healing. Fortunately for Roadhog, he can do just that. With his ultimate, Whole Hog, he can easily get through almost any of Baptiste’s healing so that his team and push forward for objectives. Another major pro to Roadhog is his Chain Hook, which directly counters Baptiste’s Immortality Field. With the hook, Roadhog can pull any problem enemy out from the protective area and pick up a kill. From there, he and his team can easily win the upcoming fight.
One thing Roadhog players need to be careful of when going into Baptiste is his Amplification Matrix. With his ability active, even with Take a Breather, Roadhog can easily be out-damaged by Baptiste and his team. Because of that, it is best for him to either bait out the ability so he can make a favorable play, or stay with his team for a head-on charge to rush past the field so that the attacks are no longer buffed.
Baptiste counter #2: Sombra
When in a matchup against a Baptiste, Sombra has a huge role to play for her team. Since Baptiste can easily and quickly protect his allies, to counter him, a hero would need to be able to shut down these abilities so their team can push forward when the enemy has no support. That is the exact reason why Sombra is such a strong counter into Baptiste. With her Hack, she can shut down his abilities so that he can’t heal and protect allies as effectively. Sombra can also deal a lot of burst damage with her Machine Pistol, so if she uses her Stealth to get behind Baptiste and past his Amplification Matrix, she can easily take him and his team by surprise and pick up a few kills.
Something Sombra players need to watch out for when going into Baptiste is that he can deal a fair amount of damage, and she is a rather squishy hero. Because of that, she can easily be taken out if she makes a wrong move. It is important to keep that in mind when making those sneaky all-in plays. As long as she doesn’t overstep and has a Translocator active, she should be in a good spot.
Baptiste counter #1: Widowmaker
Every team composition in Overwatch needs a long-range hero so that they can take out pesky targets in one shot and provide their team cover when they are looking to make a big play. For Baptiste especially, the opposing team needs to have a sniper to take out problem targets when he starts to get ahead. For those reasons, Widowmaker is an ideal hero for the job. With the Sniper Mode on her weapon, she can easily take out Baptiste from afar as well as any problem allies he may be healing. Another huge advantage to taking her is that she can easily snipe Baptiste’s Immortality Field. If she gets rid of it as soon as it comes up, not only is he down an ability, but it gives her and her team the perfect chance to start a fight on their terms.
However, Widowmaker still needs to use caution around Baptiste. With his Exo Boots, he can get to some of the same hard-to-reach spots she likes to perch on. This means that he can easily sneak up on her when she least expects it. Because of that, it is best that Widowmaker either keeps an eye on Baptiste, keeps her back to a wall, or stays with her team so that he doesn’t get the chance to make the pick. Once Widowmaker is down, it will be much harder for her team to capture an objective or win a fight, so it is best that she stays protected.
